ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University indoor track and field team wrapped up the season with a fifth place finish at the 2022 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Grand Valley State this weekend.
Freshman
Crystal Walker was named freshman field athlete of the meet with a third place finish in the pentathlon along with top finishes in the long jump and 60m hurdles.
The Wildcats earned 58 total team points. On Saturday, the Wildcats scored in three of five scoring events, claiming 19 points on day one. On Sunday, Northern would score in nine different events, accumulating 37 points.
Saturday Final Results
In the pentathlon,
Crystal Walker earned one of three podium finishes for NMU on the weekend, coming in third with 3,230 points in the event.
Nina Augsten came in fifth with 2,912 points. That scored the Wildcats ten team points.
In the long jump,
Crystal Walker again added points for NMU, this time finishing sixth with a mark of 5.27m. Right behind in seventh was teammate
Akirah Venerable, hitting a mark of 5.24m. The two finishes earned Northern five more points.
The team of
Elise Longley,
Emme Burrough,
Morgan Lyon, and
Anna Kelley earned four points with a fifth place finish in the distance medley relay finals, clocking in at 12:19.00. That rounded out the 19 points earned from NMU in Saturday's events.
Sunday Final Results
The two other podium finishes for the Green and Gold came from
Izabelle Peterson. Peterson finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.69, adding eight points for NMU.
Izabelle Peterson also ran to a third place finish in the 200m race, clocking in at 24.79 and earning another six points for the 'Cats.
In the triple jump,
Leah Root placed in fourth, narrowly missing a top-3 finish. Root jumped 10.66m and collected five points.
In the 60m hurdles, NMU saw two student-athletes earn points for the team.
Crystal Walker finished fifth at 8.86 seconds and
Ellyse Wolfrath finished seventh at 9.05 seconds. NMU achieved six points in the event.
In the 800m race,
Hannah Jones pocketed another five points as she placed fifth with a time of 2:15.01. Jones would add a couple more points in the 400m dash, running to a seventh place finish with a time of 1:03.77.
Elise Longley claimed sixth in the 3,000m distance race with a time of 10:10.76, adding three points.
In the 1,600m relay races, the Wildcat group of
Sydney Romps,
Emme Burrough,
Akirah Venerable, and
Hannah Jones finished fifth with a time of 3:59.60 for four points.
Over in the field,
Calli Rechsteiner jumped to a height of 3.45m in the pole vault to claim eighth and another NMU point.
Next Step
Izabelle Peterson (200m dash) and
Crystal Walker (60m hurdles) each hit the provisional national marks this season in their repsective events and will wait for the indoor track and field selections to be announced on
Tuesday, March 1 by 6 p.m. ET via press release on
NCAA.com to see if they have qualified.
The 2022 NCAA DII indoor track and field championship will run from March 11-12 from the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas. A total of 404 participants will take part in the 2022 championship.
