ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University track and field team completed competition at the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Saturday (Feb. 15) from Allendale, Mich.
"This weekend was a great confidence booster for our student athletes as we head into our final preparation for GLIAC's in two weeks," said NMU head coach Cheree Hicks. "I'm very proud of the group and their effort this weekend as a whole, each of the 15 team members had either a lifetime or season best today."
Freshman Avadon James placed first in the 60-meter dash with a personal best of 7.89 seconds. Junior Christina Toogood added a third place finish in the 800 finishing in 2:13.89.
Junior Ebony Young placed third in the long jump with a jump of 5.37 meters and was 12th in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.41.
Junior Larissa Halonen finished third in the mile with a career best time of 5:07.33. Junior Chelsea Farquhar was 13th and sophomore Catherine Swiderski was 29th (5:330.90), both good for career bests.
In the 200, junior Brittni Wirtz placed 11th (25.97) and James finished 21st (26.20), both personal records in the event.
Junior Olivia Howard was NMU's top finisher in the 3,000 placing 12th with a time of 10:31.80 for a career best. Also finishing for NMU in the top 50 with career highs in the 3K were Halonen (15th, 10:36.66), junior Emily Allen (29th, 10:56.90), Swiderski (38th, 11:20.68) and freshman Shannon Flynn (48th, 11:50.78)
Freshman Jasmine Williams placed 14th in the shot put. She finished with a personal best in the weight throw at 14.50 meters which was 23rd overall.
The 4x400 relay team of senior Sydney Schultz, Wirtz, James and Young finished in 4:04.82, a season best time for the group, which finished in 14th overall.
The Wildcats return to action March 1-2 at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championship.
