Wildcats Blank Storm, 1-0, Behind Maravilla's Late Goal

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's soccer team blanked Lake Erie, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field in front of 202 fans.

The Wildcats and Storm struggled in the first half of play to find offense. Gabriella Garza was able to spring free in the 23rd minute but her shot sailed wide of the net.

Lake Erie's Elizabeth Awuah slipped behind the defense in the 37th minute but was denied when Alexandra Simmons came up with a crucial save for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats and Storm continued their defensive struggle through the early stages of the second half. In the 79th minute, Carmen Villarruel connected with Wynona Maravilla for the lone goal of the contest to secure the win for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats held the edge in both corner kicks, 5-0, and shots, 16-9. Simmons remained solid in net for the Wildcats, posting three saves. Lake Erie's Marissa Brannon made five saves.

With the win, Northern Michigan moves to 2-7 (2-3 GLIAC) on the season and stretches its winning streak to two games. The Wildcats return to action when they travel to Findlay Oct. 9 to take on the Oilers at 4 p.m.
