Wildcats fall to Lakers in regular season finale

The GLIAC Tournament begins with a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, November 3

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The NMU women's soccer team fell to the (RV) Grand Valley State Lakers 0-1 to end the regular season slate of matches.

With this weekend's result, the Wildcats (8-5-5, 5-5-4 GLIAC, 6th - 19 pts) finished sixth in the conference and will be on the road for the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament on Tuesday, November 3.

With today's result, the Lakers (10-3-5, 8-2-4 GLIAC, 2nd - 28 pts) jumped from 4th to 2nd place and will host its quarterfinal match. In its first season as a program, the Wayne State Warriors were crowned GLIAC Regular Season champions, and will host the GLIAC Tournament should the Warriors get a result on Tuesday.

The lone goal of the contest came at the 23:23 mark of the first half from the boot of Ava Kozak, her sixth of the season. The Lakers held advantages in shots (16-5), shots on goal (8-1), and corners (7-5). The Lakers were whistled for more fouls (14-6), and were shown the lone yellow card of the game.

Goalkeeper Carly Sides made seven saves in 90 minutes of action, her second-most saves in a game this season. Along with the goalkeeper, the back line of Ava Buhlman, Riley Hill, Irene Kiilunen, and Madalyn Nissen all played the full 90, with midfielder Sole Corley also tacking on 90.

Gretchen Ellis (83), Madison Bilbia (70), Izzy Armstrong (57), Alyse Daavettila (51), and Addison Frantti (46) rounded out the starting eleven. Buhlman, Hill, and Bilbia all notched a shot attempt, with Hill getting the lone shot on target.

The 'Cats used five student-athletes off the bench today, including good shifts from Cecelia Wille (36) and Lily Senese (44). Ema Delgado (22), Marena Maceroni (17), and Isabella Lorens (14) rounded out the field players to see action.

The 'Cats now look to get back on form, as the postseason starts quickly. The Wildcats will get back to Marquette before hitting the road almost immediately following, as the GLIAC Tournament begins with the quarterfinal match on Tuesday, November 3.
