#6 Wildcats fall 2-1 to #3 Cardinals in GLIAC Quarterfinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The NMU women's soccer team was eliminated from the 2026 GLIAC Tournament, falling 2-1 to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals.

The Wildcats (8-6-5, 5-5-4 GLIAC) entered the tournament as the #6 seed in the GLIAC and were tasked with traveling to #3 Saginaw Valley (11-6-2, 8-4-2 GLIAC) just days after completing its final regular-season road trip in Allendale, Michigan, on Saturday.

The Wildcats' season will end, while the Cardinals advance to the GLIAC Semifinals this weekend.

Kylie Cesarek opened the scoring, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead just shy of the first half's 17-minute mark. Emily Kolodin added an assist, and the Cardinals held an 11-0 shot advantage going into the second half.

Ryleigh Gray gave the Cardinals a two-goal advantage just over ten minutes into the second half, with Kolodin adding her second assist of the game and Peyton Kennedy garnering an assist as well.

The Wildcats cut into the Cardinals' lead 10 minutes later, as Lily Senese confidently finished off a slick passing play from Ema Delgado and Cecilia Wille, giving the 'Cats life with 25 minutes to play.

NMU generated its chances in the final run of play, outshooting SVSU 3-1 in the final 10 minutes, including a near miss at tying the contest from Senese with three minutes to spare.

For the match, the Wildcats were outshot 21-7, including 4 on target to the 'Cats two, and the Cardinals had an advantage in corner kicks at 3-1.

Goalkeeper Carly Sides played the full 90 minutes, making a pair of saves from the Cardinals' four on target. Along with Sides, the back line of Ava Buhlman, Riley Hill, Irene Kiilunen, and Madalyn Nissen all logged 90-minute performances. Midfielder Sole Corley added 90 minutes, and fellow midfielder Gretchen Ellis posted 83 minutes.

Madison Bilbia (57), Addison Frantti (57), Izzy Armstrong (54), and Alyse Daavetila (52) rounded out the starting 11 for the Wildcats.
