Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's soccer team toppled Malone, 5-1, Friday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field in front of 107 fans.
The Wildcats began the scoring frenzy in the 12th minute when Carmen Villarruel scored off of a corner kick by Leah Arnold. The Wildcats extended their lead to two when Paula Hafner took her own rebound and found the back of the net in the 20th minute of play.
After Malone opened the second half with an early goal, the Wildcats answered with an Abby Cook unassisted marker in the 61st.
The Wildcats continued their offensive onslaught when Lauren McDermott found Tabitha Boze for a score in the 67th minute. Kelsa Dykehouse wrapped up the victory when she corraled a pass off a Pioneer defender and snapped it past a sprawling Leah Rauscher in the 89th minute.
The Wildcats outshot the Pioneers, 23-5. Rauscher recorded seven saves for the Pioneers while Alexandra Simmons recorded three saves for the Wildcats. Four Wildcats scored their first goal of the season in the win.
With the win, Northern Michigan moves to 1-7 (1-3 GLIAC) on the season. The Wildcats continue their homestand Sunday as they take on Lake Erie at noon.
