UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University track and field team competed at the Cardinal Invite at Saginaw Valley State University on Friday (Jan. 31) in University Center, Mich. The Wildcats captured several career and season bests on the evening.
"This was our first opportunity to compete against our conference counterparts, and we performed well," said head coach Cheree Hicks. "There were a lot of season and personal best marks accomplished this evening."
Junior Ebony Young led the Wildcats, winning two events. She placed first in the long jump (5.28 meters) and the triple jump (11.48). She added a second place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a season best time of 9.35 seconds.
Junior Brittni Wirtz took the gold in the 60 meter run with a season best of 7.82. She also had a career best in the 200 (26.18) which was good for second.
Freshman Jasmine Williams placed second in the shot put with a season best of 12.30 meters, and had a career best in the weight throw (12.93) finishing in ninth place.
Junior Larissa Halonen captured a season best time of 5:22.18 in the mile, giving her ninth place. Junior Emily Allen (10:52.00) and freshman Shannon Flynn (11:42.25) each had season best times in the 3,000, finishing in 16th and 21st, respectively.
The Wildcats travel to Duluth Minn. next week (Feb. 8) to participate in the Lake Superior Challenge.
