Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw, after two overtimes, with the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday (Sept. 28) afternoon at Sherman Field. Freshman forward Paula Hafner tied the game with 15 minutes left in regulation to send it to the extra sessions.
NMU is now 1-4-1 overall and an undefeated 1-0-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. MTU is 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play and had its two-game winning streak snapped.
Lexi Herrewig opened the game's scoring late in the second half (68:38) with an unassisted tally.
Hafner's third of the season was assisted by sophomore midfielder Gabriella Garza at 75:38.
Tech held a 29-15 advantage in shots and 11-6 in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons had 10 saves, playing all 130 minutes.
Hafner had six shots while junior Ashley Katers had four. Marybeth Spoehr had five saves for the Huskies.
It was a very physical game with 24 fouls between the two teams.
The 'Cats continue the three-game GLIAC road trip with a pair of games in Ohio at Tiffin on Oct. 4 and Tiffin on Oct. 6.
