MARQUETTE, Mich.— The Northern Michigan University soccer team began its weekend at home on Friday (Oct. 25) with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Ferris State. After todays Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match up, NMU is 4-8-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference for the season.

FSU (8-5-1, 6-3-1 GLIAC) was the first on the board at 34:29 on an unassisted goal by Meredith Smith from the right side. The Bulldogs went into the break with the 1-0 advantage. The FSU lead didn't last long, as freshman Paula Hafner knocked in a goal for the Wildcats at 46:55 of the second half, her seventh goal of the season. The shot came from the center of the box with the assist by sophomore Gabriella Garza.

The score was held at one apiece for the remainder of regulation and through 20 additional minutes in two overtimes to give the teams the tie.

Wildcat freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons saw action in all 110 minutes of the game, tallying eight saves on the afternoon. FSU's Rachel McCollum had five saves.

The Bulldogs led the shot column, 14-11. Hafner and freshman Wynona Maravilla each had three shots for the 'Cats, including two shots on goal apiece.

Casey Shauman led FSU with five shots and Riley Wood added four.

Northern continues play at home on Sunday (Oct. 26) at noon against Grand Valley State for senior day.  Seniors Heather Amr, Kaylagh Hollen, KC McCary and Nicole Musi will be honored at Sunday's game. The Lakers defeated Michigan Technological University, 2-1 on Friday (Oct. 25) in Houghton.
