PREVIEW: Women's Golf at GLIAC Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU women's golf team is on the road for the post season, traveling to Augusta, Michigan, for this year's GLIAC Championship.

Running from Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27, the team's start with 18 holes of stroke play on Friday and 18 holes of stroke play Saturday morning to determine the top four teams to advance to match play. The semifinals (1v4 and 2v3) for match play is Saturday evening, with the championship being decided on Sunday.

Tee times begin at 10 AM on Friday, with team pairings based on the most recent regional rankings. The Wildcats are traveling six athletes to the championship, those being Maddy Martens, Maggie Pietila, Hailey Bolander, Abbie Pietila, Payton Dube, and Gabriella Moreau. You can follow along with Friday and Saturday's live scoring on Scoreboard, powered by clippd, here. Should the 'Cats advance to the top four teams, you can follow the medal match stroke play here

The field consists of nine of the 11 GLIAC member schools (Michigan Tech and Roosevelt do not have women's golf programs), including the second and fourth best teams in the region, No. 10 Grand Valley and No. 37 Ferris State. Since 2001, there have been 23 championships; Grand Valley and Ferris State have won a combined 22 of those, with GVSU holding 17, including five of the past six championships. GVSU boasts five of the top 11 ranked golfers in the region, lead by nationally ranked and reigning GLIAC Women's Golfer of the Year, No. 10 Olivia Stoll.

The championships will take place at Gull Lake's Stonehedge North. Golfers who love forested terrain and formidable elevation changes will love Gull Lake View's fifth course. Designed by Charles and Jon Scott, Stonehedge North opened in 1995 and has been impressing golfers with its dramatic landscape features ever since. With six par 3's, six par 4's, and six par 5's, the North course is a fan favorite.

At the time of writing, Augusta calls for some rain on Friday, with showers early then scattered thunderstorms developing later in the day with a high of 74F and winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph. Saturday and Sunday both call for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-upper 60F, with wind anywhere from 5 to 10 mph.

Last Time at the GLIAC Tournament
