Women's Golf Concludes Marathon of a Day at NC4K Classic

Golfers played a round and a half, were out on the course for 9+ hours

GROVE CITY, Ohio - The NMU women's golf team had a long one today, playing the first round and then some in the two-day ODU NC4K Classic, being on the course for nine hours of play.

Hosted by Ohio Dominican at the Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio, golfers teed off at 11 AM ET. They played their first 18 holes of the tournament before starting their first nine holes of round two immediately after. Some were able to complete all nine, while some played anywhere from the first five to eight, with athletes finishing anywhere from just after 7 PM, and some just after 8 PM. Grove City saw temperatures in the mid-40s.

After the marathon of an outing, the 'Cats sit in 16th place with their total of +93, which includes a first-round score of 353 (+65) and +28 to begin the second round. No. 40 Ferris State was ahead at +21, followed by No. 9 Grand Valley State, and No. 47 Ashland at +36.

Three 'Cats all finished at the +19 mark after 27 holes to sit T48: Maggie Pietila, Maddy Martens, and Hailey Bolander.

Pietila, who had the worst opening 18 holes of the trio (+16), responded with by far the best nine holes of the trio (+3) to bring her to +19. Pietila had two birdies in her opening 18 holes, on the par-five 9th and par-three 11th in a stretch of holes where she was -2 through five and -1 through seven. Pietila was one of the better scorers on the par fives so far, shooting even on her five par-five holes. The leader of the tournament is -2 on par-five scoring.

Of the three mentioned above, Martens had both the second-best first 18-hole score (+12) and second-best opening nine-hole score to round two (+7). Martens recorded a birdie on the par-four 17th in round one.

Bolander recorded the best round one score of the trio (+10) before shooting the third-best score of that grouping in the nine-hole start to round two (+9). Bolander also recorded a lone birdie, hers coming on the par-four 12th in round one.

The rest of the 'Cats finished their interminable 27-hole outing all within a handful of strokes from each other. Payton Dube at +39 after 25 holes, Abbie Pietila at +41 after 27 holes, Gabriella Moreau at +42 after 25 holes, and Abby Luke competing as an individual at +43 through 26 holes of golf.

The 'Cats will conclude their final holes of round two tomorrow, with golfers teeing off at noon ET. You can view the live scoring here.
