Women's Golf in 8th at GLIAC Championship

Bolander (+9), A. Pietila (+10) pace the 'Cats after round one

AUGUSTA, Mich. - The NMU women's golf team wrapped up round one of GLIAC championship play today, turning in a score of +46 (334) to sit in eighth place of nine teams.

The Wildcats trail Parkside (+44) in seventh and are ahead of the Lakers (+48) in ninth, making up the bottom three teams in the field. Next were the teams of Saginaw Valley (+24) in sixth, Purdue NW (+22) in fifth, and Davenport (+19) in the fourth place, holding the final spot to the match play ahead of tomorrow morning. The top three teams were comprised of Wayne State (+11) in third and No. 37 Ferris State (+10) in second before another big gap, with No. 10 Grand Valley atop the leaderboard with a ten-stroke advantage. 

The 5,829-yard, par 72 Stonehedge GC North saw 45 rounds turned in today, with golfers averaging a score of 80.02. Every hole played above par today, the hardest being the 359-yard par four 10th (4.71 avg., +0.71), and easiest being the 145-yard 18th and 141-yard 17th, both par three's (3.18 avg, +0.18). As a team, the Wildcats were +13 on the par threes (7th), +27 on the par fours (8th), and +23 in the par fives (8th). The 'Cats carded six birdies (T7), 36 pars (8th), 32 bogeys (2nd), and 16 doubles or more (2nd).

The team was led by Hailey Bolander through 18 holes, with her score of +9, 81. Bolander double-bogeyed her opening hole and recorded four squares to card a 42 on the
back before making the turn. Bolander had an excellent front nine, recording seven pars, with six of those in the first seven holes on the front, en route to a 39 on the front. Bolander sits 31st on the field and first among the 'Cats.

Only one stroke behind Bolander was teammate Abbie Pietila, who scored a +10, 82. Pietila carded four pars a birdie on the back, the circle coming on the 345-yard par-four 15th, one of just five birdies on that hole this round, for a back-nine score of 41 to start. Pietila bogeyed the opening six straight holes on the front before carding her second circle of the day on the 299-yard par-four seventh, one of just seven birdies conceded today, and would finish her final three holes at -1 for a matching 41 on the front. 

Third place in team scoring was older sister Maggie Pietila, who turned in a scorecard of +13, 85. Pietila opened her day with four straight pars and shot seven-over in the proceeding four holes before ending the back nine with a birdie, recording a circle on the 519-yard par-five 18th, one of just four birdies conceded to the field. The front nine saw three pars and a birdie, this time on the 509-yard par-five fifth, to turn in a 43 on the front.

Rounding out the team scoring and finishing one stroke behind Pietila was Maddy Martens with her score of +14, 86. Martens turned in a back-nine score of 44 before shooting two strokes better on the front nine, thanks to a pair of birdies on a couple of par-threes; the 141-yard second and 158-yard eighth, two of just seven combined birdies between the pair of holes.

Payton Dube rounded out the Wildcat golfers, scoring a round of +17, 89. Dube had a great start to her round, tying the team lead with a back-nine 41, before an eight on the par-four third and a pair of double bogeys on the front-nine resulted in a 48 on the front. 

The No. 10 golfer in the nation and reigning GLIAC Golfer of the Year and GLIAC Champion Olivia Stoll of GVSU held the clubhouse lead at -3, 69, thanks to an eagle, two birdies, and 14 pars. Teammate Paula Badino is in second at -1, 72, and Sophia Wygonik of Wayne State in third with an E, 72.
