PREVIEW: Men's Nordic Ski Set for NCAA Championship

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU men's nordic ski team is in Hanover, NH this week for the 2025 NCAA Skiing Championships. 

The 2025 Skiing National Championships, hosted at Oak Hill and The Skiway, will kick off on Tuesday, March 4 with an opening ceremony, while competition will officially begin on Wednesday, March 5. The opening ceremony will take place on The Green and feature and highlight all teams and student-athletes participating in this year's National Championship. The teams will be led in by the Dartmouth Marching Band and introduced. The ceremony will begin at 4:45 p.m. 

The 'Cats ski in the 7.5k classic individual start on Thursday, March 6 at noon, followed by the 20k freestyle mass start on Saturday, March 8 at 10 a.m.

  • Wednesday, March 5: Men's and Women's Slalom at The Skiway
    • Women's: First Run - 8:30 a.m., Second Run - 12:30 p.m.
    • Men's: First Run - 10:15 a.m., Second Run - 1:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 6: Men's and Women's 7.5K Classic Individual Start at Oak Hill
    • Women's: 10 a.m.
    • Men's: 12 p.m.
  • Friday, March 7: Men's and Women's Giant Slalom at The Skiway
    • Women's: First Run - 9:00 a.m., Second Run - 12:15 p.m.

Last Time Out - NCAA Regionals
The NMU men's nordic ski opened its weekend at the 2025 NCAA Central Regional Championships with a pair of medals in the 7.5k.

Using its home track to their advantage, Luke Fricker claimed gold and Kristoffer Karsrud earned silver, beating the rest of the field by nearly 30 seconds.

Fricker opened with a 2.5k time of 6:42.1, second to only Karsrud, before posting lap times of 6:41.0 and 7:43.4 en route to a finish time of 21:06.6. Fricker's final two lap times were fastest among the field.

Karsrud opened with the fastest first lap time of the day at 6:35.1 before posting times of 6:50.1 and 7:43.1, second to only Fricker en route to his finish time of 21:08.4.

The NMU men's nordic kki team wrapped up in similar fashion as Saturday, with Luke Fricker bringing home to gold once again. 

It came down to the last stretch, as Fricker was neck and neck with Tryg Solberg and Colin Freed of Michigan Tech. Fricker held the advantage and crossed the line first, outting Solberg by 0.3 seconds and Freed by 1.9 seconds. Fricker posted lap times of 12:48.08, 13:29.2, 13:33.1, and 14:45.0 en route to his second gold medal of the weekend with a time of 54:35.3. Solberg finished second at 54:35.6, and Freed bronze with 54:37.3. 

Last Time at NCAA Championships
 The men's nordic ski team wrapped up competition from their first day the NCAA Skiing Championships, led by Kristoffer Karsrud.

Karsrud (6:38.4, 14:03.5 - 21:35.2) was the first Wildcat to cross the finish line, skiing to 31st. Luke Fricker (6:30.7, 13:36.2 - 21:49.2) was next to cross the line in 33rd. Fricker posted the 16th fastest time in the first 2.5km. Mathias Haugen (6:39.4, 14:17.4 - 21:55.8) rounded out the 'Cats skiers in 35th.

The team wrapped up competition at this years NCAA Championships with the 20k mass start, led by Kristoffer Karsrud in 28th.

Karsrud paced the 'Cats with his time of 1:00:31.9, followed by Luke Fricker in 33rd with a time of 1:01:25.5, and rounded out with Mathias Haugen in 40th with his time of 1:05:49.8.
