Kraftson Leads Wildcats in 40k at SuperTour Finals

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The NMU men's nordic ski season came to an end today with a long one, competing in the 40k classic mass start at the SuperTour Finals.

Of 78 skiers, there was a field of 57 who completed the marathon of a race, with finishers completing the distance race anywhere from one hour and fifty minutes to two and a half hours.

Four 'Cats raced, led by Adrik Kraftson in 7th among collegiate skiers and 17th overall with his time of 2:02:49.9, 11:43.4 behind the leader. In the mass start format, all the racers were let off at once. Kraftson started the race in 22nd before slipping to 26th by the 10k marker. The CCSA Skier of the Year made up time the rest of the way, moving up to 20th by the 13.75k marker and staying in that position until the 26.25k marker, where he leaped 17th. Kraftson would go on to jump to 16th and fall to 18th in the final handful of splits before finishing in the 17 spot.

The next member of the green and gold across the finish was Kristoffer Karsrud in 25th overall and 10th among collegiate skiers with his time of 2:05:47.6. Karsrud had a rollercoaster of a start, opening in 18th at the first marker before falling to 29th just 1.25k later before falling to 33rd by the 7.5k mark. Karsrud climbed to land in 26th by the 17.5k mark, and would remain in the 25/26 spot the rest of the way.

Jonathan Clarke and Luke Fricker finished one after the other in 39th and 40th overall and 14th and 15th collegiately at 2:12:07.3 and 2:12:18.1, respectively.

It was a photo finish at the top, as John Hegenbuch from the Dartmouth Ski Team claimed gold at 1:51:06.5, ahead of Gus Schumacher of the APU Nordic Ski Team at 1:51:07.4, just .9 seconds behind Hagenbuch. Remi Drolet of SMS was third at 1:51:24.0.
