Karsrud Claims Fifth in Sprint Finals at SuperTour Finals

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The NMU men's nordic ski team wrapped up competition in the sprints at the SuperTour Finals, with Kristoffer Karsrud finishing fifth overall.

Of 99 skiers from both professional and collegiate programs who raced, the top 30 qualified to the bracket section of the competition. Karsrud finished 12th overall in qualifying to advance, posting a time of 2:34.30. Karsrud was the third-fastest collegiate skier in qualifying.

Karsrud began by skiing in the fourth quarterfinal group. Karsrud finished second in the group and an automatic bid to the semifinals with his time of 2:39.50.

Karsrud then finished third in the second semifinal heat with his time of 2:44.50, narrowly missing the automatic qualification to the finals. Karsrud's time was enough to earn him the first "lucky loser" spot (the top-two times from any semifinal bracket who weren't the top-two in their heat), and Karsrud advanced to the finals.

Karsrud then posted a time of 2:58.95 in the finals, finishing fifth overall and the only collegiate skier to advance and ski in the finals.

Three skiers missed the top-30 cut in qualifying, those being Luke Fricker (38th, 2:42.45), Adrik Kraftson (66th, 2:48.28), and Jonathan Clarke (85th, 2:55.95).

Through the sprints, Karsrud leads the team and is 18th overall in SuperTour points with 80, all of those coming from sprint points, and 32 of those points coming from today's finish. Fricker is 46th overall with 23 points, Kraftson 72nd with seven points, and Clarke 81st with three. The full list of SuperTour points can be found here.

The 'Cats now look ahead to tomorrow's mixed 4 x 5k mixed team relay, with competition starting at 10 a.m. from Mt. Van Hoevenberg.
