QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 12-ranked Northern Michigan wrestling team went 2-1 in the first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) duals on Sunday.
Northern opened its day with a 33-8 win over Davenport, with seven victories, including two by forfeit, across the 10 weight classes. NMU then lost to No. 2 McKendree 37-6, with
Mickaela Keane picking up the lone victory for the Wildcats. The event ended against Upper Iowa, where NMU won 38-0 with five forfeit wins.
Keane led Northern with a victory in each dual, while
Emma Heslin and
Sophia Bassino also added a pair of wins.
No. 12 Northern Michigan 33, Davenport 8
The first bout against the Panthers came at 138.
Keaton Hood fell in an 11-2 decision, giving Davenport a 3-1 lead.
Northern followed with three straight tech-fall victories.
Alissa Caltagirone won at 145 in just 55 seconds, while
Sophia Bassino followed with a victory at 160 in 1:21. At 180,
Abbie Miles also made quick work of her opponent, claiming her win in 56 seconds. Each win earned the Wildcats four points as they moved ahead 13-3.
Mickaela Keane and
Zhivanna Magdaleno each collected five more points for the Wildcats at 207 and 117 for 10 NMU points.
At 103,
Emma Heslin secured a pin for a 6-2 victory via fall. That gave Northern five more points to lead 28-3.
Jamie Cook tacked on five more points for NMU by securing a pin at 124. The Wildcats forfeited at 131 for the 33-8 final score.
No. 12 Northern Michigan 6, No. 2 McKendree 37
The match started at 103, where Heslin lost by fall, giving the Bearcats a 5-0 lead. A forfeit at 110 by Northern made it 10-0 Bearcats. Magdaleno (117), Cook (124), and Hood (131) also fell. After NMU forfeited at 138, McKendree led 28-0.
Caltagirone (145), Bassino (160), and Miles (180) each picked up a point for NMU despite narrow losses by decision.
Keane ended the dual on a positive note for Northern with a 3-0 win by decision for three points, but McKendree won the matchup 37-6.
No. 12 Northern Michigan 38, Upper Iowa 0
Heslin began the match against the Peacocks with a tech fall win in 1:04. Magdaleno (117), Cook (124), Hood (138), and Caltagirone (145) each added points via forfeit wins to lead 24-0.
At 160, Bassino collected more points when she secured her bout by tech fall in only 58 seconds.
Miles followed with a win by fall in the bout at 180, needing only 36 seconds. At 207, Keane and NMU secured the shutout with another forfeit win.
