MARQUETTE, Mich. – Three Northern Michigan women's wrestlers will take the mat on the national stage March 6-7, as
Alissa Caltagirone (145),
Sophia Bassino (160), and
Abbie Miles (180) compete at the NCAA Championships this weekend.
The trio earned automatic bids with top-three finishes at the NCAA Regional 4 Qualifier in Tiffin, Ohio, helping the Wildcats place fourth out of 18 teams with 80 points.
Caltagirone, a junior, enters nationals after a runner-up finish at regionals. She advanced to the title bout with three dominant victories, including back-to-back falls and a technical fall in the semifinal. The Farmingdale, N.Y., native was recently named All-GLVC First Team, the lone non-McKendree wrestler to earn first-team honors, and will look to build on a season that has consistently placed her among the nation's top competitors at 145 pounds.
Miles, a redshirt sophomore at 180 pounds, also placed second at the regional tournament with a 3-1 record. She powered into the championship match with three technical falls, including a decisive semifinal victory over the No. 2 seed. An All-GLVC Second Team selection, the Kenosha, Wis., native brings an aggressive, bonus-point style that has fueled her postseason run.
Bassino secured a third-place finish at 160 pounds to punch her ticket to Coralville. After a semifinal setback at regionals, she responded with consecutive technical falls to claim bronze. The sophomore from Chicago, Ill., earned All-GLVC Second Team honors and was also recognized as Northern Michigan's recipient of the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, highlighting both her performance and leadership this season.
The NCAA Championships will be held March 6-7 in Coralville, Iowa, as the Wildcats aim to cap their season with All-America performances on the sport's biggest stage.
