#10 Women's Swim Completes Day Two at Calvin Invite

The 'Cats maintained its second-place status through two days of competition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The #10 women's swim team had another strong day of competition, holding onto the second-place position.

The Wildcats (1020.5 pts) trail #4 GVSU (1354.5 pts) while ahead of #11 Findlay (855.5). The full results for the finals can be found here, and the full results from the prelims can be found here when made available.

Through two days of action, Evie DeCarlo leads the team with 51 combined points. DeCarlo swam with the fourth-place 200 medley relay team, and claimed fifth as an individual in the 100 breast.

Carlotta Santi (49 points) and Manuela Araujo (48 points) are second and third to DeCarlo through day two. Santi finished sixth as an individual in the 200 free and was a member of the second-place 800 free relay team, and Araujo finished sixth in the 400 IM and was a member of the fifth-place 800 free relay team. 

Kalina Ceglinski continues to be a force on the boards, winning the 1-meter six-dive with a score of 444.15, nearly 23 points ahead of second place. Josie Bossen finished seventh with 372.30.

Laura Stockinger (42 pts), Nicole Malinova (40 pts), Sophia Moore (39 pts), Abby Keen (39 pts), Joanne Arbic (37 pts), Nadia Blackmore (37 pts), and Caitlin Aarseth (36 pts) were also among the team-leaders.

How It Happened - Finals
The 200 medley relay opened the evening session, hosting four heats and 32 teams. The top three NMU relay teams swam in the A finals, and it was the NMU A team of Laura Stockinger (Back), Evie DeCarlo (Breast), Phini Schneider (Fly), and Joanne Arbic (Free) who touched the wall just shy of third place, finishing at 1:43.90. The NMU B relay od Emma Casas, Julia Zimpel, Nicole Malinova, and Vicky Burda placed sixth, and the NMU C relay of Evangeline Pierce, Nadia Blackmore, Sophia Moore, and Tegan Rose finished eighth. NMU D, consisting of Kenzie Stute, Ludovica Bonini, Pauline Izydorek, and Brooklyn Millward claimed 10th from the B final. NMU was the only program with four relays finish in the top-10. 

The 100 fly opened with a C final that featured Julia Plevak touching the wall in third in her heat at 1:01.22, and Annie Devine finished sixth in the B finals with a time of 59.79. The A final featured Phini Schneider (57.73), Sophia Moore (57.88), Nicole Malinova (58.67), and Pauline Izydorek (59.97), who finished fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. 

Manuela Araujo was the lone 'Cat to swim in the A finals of the 400 IM, posting a time if 4:40.23 to finish sixth.

The 200 free had four heats, starting with Teagan Rose and Anna Karubas finishing 3rd and 5th in the D final. Brooklyn Millward was the lone Wildcat in the C final, claiming second place in the heat with a 2:00.22. Caitlin Aarseth won the B final at 1:56.72, and Joanne Arbic finished fourth in the B final at 1:58.38. The trio of Abby Keen (1:55.34), Carlotta Santi (1:55.47), and Elie Kilgard (1:56.68) swam next to each other in the pool lanes for the A final, finishing fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively.

The 100 breast saw Ludovica Bonini represent NMU in the B final to start, where she captured a first-place finish in the B with her time of 1:05.55. The A final saw Evie DeCarlo, Julia Zimpel, and Nadia Blackmore represent NMU, posting times of 1:03.98, 1:05.30, and 1:05.34 to finish fifth, seventh, and eighth. 

The trio of Nicole Malinova (59.61), Kenzie Stute (59.71), and Vicky Burda (59.72) finished second, third, and fourth to open the Wildcat account in the B final of the 100 back. Evangeline Pierece claimed silver with a time of 56.33, followed by Emma Casas in fourth at 57.12, and Laura Stockinger rounding out the A final at 59.30.

 
 

How It Happened - Prelims/Morning Session
The morning started with the 100 fly, where there were five heats and 37 swimmers, and three 'Cats qualified for the A final. Phini Schneider swam in the third heat and posted the fourth-fastest time of the qualifiers at 57.32. Nicole Malinova swam in the final heat and posted a time of 58.20, the seventh-fastest, and Pauline Izydorek swam in the fourth heat, winning her heat and posting the eighth-quickest time at 58.21. Just missing the top eight and earning a B final spot was Sophia Moore in ninth (58.28), followed by Annie Devine (59.36) to round out the top 16. Emma Casas, Julia Plevak, and Evangeline Pierce will all swim in the C final.

Two Wildcats qualified for the A finals out of four heats and 25 swimmers in the 400 IM, led by Anika Wright, who posted the second-fastest time of the morning with a 4:30.69. Manuela Araujo posted the seventh-quickest time at 4:37.96, and both Nadia Blackmore and Kenzie Stute were scratched.

The 200 free saw five heats and 40 swimmers, with three Wildcats represented in the A final. Carlotta Santi posted the fourth-fastest time, touching the wall at 1:54.01, followed by Abby Keen and Ellie Kilgard in sixth and eighth. Caitlin Aarseth missed the A finals by .06 seconds, and will be joined by Joanne Arbic in the B finals. Brooklyn Millward will swim in the C finals this evening. 

The 100 breast had five heats of 34 swimmers, with Evie DeCarlo pacing the Wildcats in fourth with her time of 1:04.13. Julia Zimpel (1:04.70) and Nadia Blackmore (1:05.60) both earned appearances in the A final as well. Ludovica Bonini is the lone 'Cat in the B final tonight, finishing 11th in the morning session. 

Evangeline Pierce turned in the top time in the 100 back, touching the wall at 56.57. Emma Casas also podiumed in the morning session, claiming third with a time of 57.18. Laura Stockinger rounded out the 'Cats to earn a spot in the A final with her 57.79. Nicole Malinova, Vicky Burda, and Kenzie Stute will swim in the B final.

There were two heats of 15 teams in the 800 free relay during the morning session, with all three of the NMU relays swimming in the final heat. The NMU A team of Anika Wright, Carlotta Santi, Abby Keen, and Annika Geyer battled the GVSU A relay for the top spot, as NMU finished second with a 7:34.46, just three seconds behind GVSU but 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. The NMU B team of Manuela Araujo, Ellie Kilgard, Sophia Moore, and Caitlin Aarseth claimed fifth, and the NMU C relay finished eighth.
