Ceglinski Named GLIAC Diver of the Year, Claims Gold at Final Day of GLIAC Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The fourth and final day of the GLIAC Championships came to a close, and the Wildcats would end with a second-place finish.

Kalina Ceglinski capped off a tremendous season with gold in the 1-meter diving, thanks to a score of 436.35. Grace Daly performed well in the A final as well, finishing fourth at 415.85. After a season that saw Ceglinski atop the podium more times than not and leading the nation in 1-meter diving, the junior earned GLIAC Female Diver of the Year honors.

The women ended the weekend with a silver medal in the 400 free relay, as the team of Abby Keen, Evie DeCarlo, Vicky Burda, and Joanne Arbic touched the wall at 3:27.96.

Other top finishes include Annika Geyer (4th, 1650 free), Laura Stockinger (4th, 100 free), Abby Keen (5th, 100 free), Joanne Arbic (6th, 100 free), Evangeline Pierce (4th, 200 back), Evie DeCarlo (6th, 200 back), Julia Zimpel (8th, 200 back).

NMU claimed a second-place finish with 708 points, behind Grand Valley with 1095 and ahead of Wayne State with 591.

How It Happened
After the seniors were honored, the evening began with the 1650 (mile), and Annika Geyer represented NMU in lane three. Geyer came less than three seconds from landing on the podium, finishing fourth with a time of 17:28.70. 

Vicky Burda and Carlotta Santi opened the 100 free in the B finals, finishing fourth and sixth with 52.63 and 53.22. Joanne Arbic, Abby Keen, and Laura Stockinger all swam in the championship heat. Stockinger just missed the podium at 51.58, Keen fifth at 51.83, and Arbic sixth at 51.85. 

The B final of the 200 back featured Emma Casas, who touched the wall in second at the halfway point, just milliseconds behind. Casas would finish second in her heat at 2:05.83. Evangeline Pierce found her way to lane three for the championship heat, who was second at the first 50 and the halfway mark. Pierce maintained her silver-medal pace into the final 50, but would be edged out at the wall, falling to 4th with a time of 2:01.06. Third place was 0.10 seconds ahead, with silver 0.45 seconds ahead. 

The 200 breast Nadia Blackmore, Manual Araujo, and Sophia Moore. Blackmore finished second at 2:24.48, Araujo fifth at 2:25.22, and Moore eighth at 2:30.32. Evie DeCarlo and Julia Zimpel competed side-by-side in lanes seven and eight of the championship heat, finishing sixth and eighth at 2:20.91 and 2:24.04. 

The 400 free relay ended the evening, and the 'Cats entered the pool with the second-fastest entry time. The Lakers and Wildcats separated themselves from the rest of the field, finishing one and two with the 'Cats touching the wall at 3:27.96.

 

Morning Session
Laura Stockinger, Joanne Arbic, and Abby Keen all swam their way to a championship heat appearance in the 100 free, while Vicky Burda and Carlotta Santi earned spots in the B finals. Phini Schneider is the first alternate, finishing 17th overall. 

Evangeline Pierce punched her ticket to the championship heat as the third seed in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:01.22. Emma Casas will represent NMU in the B final.

Evie DeCarlo and Julia Zimpel earned seeds six and eight and will compete in the championship heat of the 200 breast. At the same time, teammates Nadia Blackmore, Manuela Araujo, and Sophia Moore will all swim in the B final. 

The B final of the 1650 free was swam this morning, an event that saw Caitlin Aarseth and Ellie Kilgard finish fourth and seventh. Annika Geyer will compete in the championship heat this evening, as she enters with the third-fastest entry time. 

How It Happened
The 100 free kicked off the morning, featuring five heats of 36 swimmers, and three 'Cats were featured in heat two: Brooklyn Millward in lane five, Pauline Izydorek in lane seven, and Anna Karubas in lane eight. Izydorek and Millward finished second and third at 53.90 and 54.22, while Karubas finished seventh at 56.79. Annie Devine and Abby Keen swam in the heat following, as Keen finished second at 52.21 and Devine sixth at 53.82. Four 'Cats swam in the fourth heat: Vicky Burda, Joanne Arbic, Phini Schneider, and Teagan Rose. Arbic posted a 52.05, Burda a 52.49, Schneider a 53.68, and Rose a 54.26. Carlotta Santi and Laura Stockinger featured in the final heat, where Stockinger posted a 51.52 and Santi a 53.07.

Julia Plevak was in the opening heat of the 200 back, winning her heat at 2:13.45. The third heat featured Nicole Malinova, who finished fifth at 2:09.16. Kenzie Stute, Evangeline Pierce, and Emma Casas featured in heat four, swimming in lanes one, five, and six. Pierce finished second at 2:01.22, and Casas and Stute landed fourth and fifth at 2:06.46 and 2:07.56.

Heat two of the 200 breast saw Manuela Araujo and Evie DeCarlo, with DeCarlo winning the heat at 2:21.46 and Araujo third at 2:26.41. Julia Zimpel and Ludovica Bonini competed in lanes three and seven. Zimpel placed fourth at 2:22.14, and Bonnini sixth at 2:28.72. Nadia Blackmore and Sophia Moore swam in the fourth and final heat of the 200 breast, where they finished fifth and seventh at 2:25.90 and 2:30.85, respectively.

Heat two of the 1650 (mile) competed this morning, and Ellie Kilgard and Caitlin Aarseth kicked off in lanes two and five. Aarseth would finish fourth at 18:00.09, and Kilgard seventh at 18:23.51.
