Women's Swim in Second after Day One of Calvin Invite

The team garnered 455.5 points, trailing only GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The #10 NMU women's swim and dive team garnered 455.5 points on day one of the Calvin Invite, good enough for second of six teams. 

In first was the #4 Grand Valley State Lakers with 651.5, followed by NMU in second and #11 Findlay in third with 422 points. Hosts Calvin claimed 343, Indiana Wesleyan 190, and Lawrence 64. Full finals results can be found here

Evie DeCarlo led the team with 26 points, finishing seventh and fourth as a member of the 200 free and 400 medley relays, along with a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM finals. Carlotta Santi was next with 25 points as a member of the ninth-place 200 free relay team and a fifth-place finish in the 500 free.

Manuela Araujo and Annika Geyer both garnered 24 points. Araujo finished sixth in the 200 IM and a member of the fourth-place 400 medley relay team, and Geyer finished sixth in the 500 free and was a member of the ninth-place 400 medley relay.

How It Happened
The evening started with three heats of 24 teams in the 200 free relay, with seven of the top eight times coming in the final heat, and three NMU relays represented in the third heat. The NMU A relay of Vicky Burda, Laura Stockinger, Abby Keen, and Joanne Arbic posted a time of 1:34.86 to finish fourth, and the NMU B relay of Tegan Rose, Evie DeCarlo, Ellie Kilgard, and Phini Schneider claimed seventh at 1:36.40. The NMU C relay of Annie Devine, Emma Casas, Carlotta Santi, and Brooklyn Millward were the only team in the final heat to place outside of the top-8, slotting in at 9th.

Qualifying for the A final in the morning session, Carlotta Santi and Annika Geyer finished fifth and sixth in the 500 free with times of 5:02.25 and 5:03.84. Caitlin Aarseth swam in the B finals, finishing 11th with a time of 5:10.25.

Evie DeCarlo and Manuela Araujo swam in the A finals for the 200 IM, claiming fourth and sixth with times of 2:07.37 and 2:08.39, respectively. Nadia Blackmore, Sophia Moore, and Kenzie Stute finished 12th, 13th, and 15th after swimming in the B final. 

Joanne Arbic competed in the A final of the 50 free, finishing in eighth with her time of 24.15. In the B final, Laura Stockinger finished first in the B final and ninth overall at 23.97, Vicky Burda 12th at 24.23, Abby Keen in 13th at 24.24, and Phini Schneider in 14th at 24.29. 

The 400 medley relay featured four heats of 26 teams, with three NMU teams finishing in the top eight. The NMU A team of Casas (Back), DeCarlo (Breast), Moore (Fly), and Stockinger (Free) claimed fourth at 3:51.52, edging out the NMU B team of Evangeline Pierce (Back), Araujo (Breast), Schneider (Fly), and Keen (Free) by .02 seconds, who finished at 3:51.54. The NMU E and NMU C teams also finished neck and neck, with the E team finishing eighth at 3:54.57 and the C team finishing ninth at 3:54.58.

 

Morning Session
Carlotta Santi and Annika Geyer will feature in the A finals in the 500 free, followed by Caitlin Aarseth in the B final.

Evie DeCarlo and Manuela Araujo will represent NMU in the A finals of the 200 IM, with Nadia Blackmore, Kenzie Stute, and Sophia Moore in the B final. Pauline Izydorek and Julia Zimpel will compete in the C final, and Julia Plevak is the first alternate. 

Joanne Arbic is the lone 'Cat in the A final of the 50 free, followed by Vicky Burda, Laura Stockinger, and Abby Keen in the 50 free. Tegan Rose and Annie Devine will swim in the C final.

How It Happened
The 500 Free kicked off the day one morning session, with five heats and 38 swimmers. There were four Wildcats to swim in the event, all competing in the fourth heat: Carlotta Santi, Annika Geyer, Caitlin Aarseth, and Ellie Kilgard. Santi finished first in the heat and 4th overall with her time of 5:00.23, followed by Geyer in second place in the heat and 7th overall with a time of 5:06.31. Aarseth claimed fourth in the heat and 11th overall at 5:07.20, and Kilgard finished at 5:15.60 before being scratched. The top 24 advanced to the finals this evening, with Santia and Geyer earning a spot in the A final and Aarseth earning a place in the B final.

The 200 IM was the next event, with six heats and 45 swimmers. Julia Plevak and Ludovica Bonini swam in heat three, finishing fifth and seventh in their heat with times of 2:17.28 and 2:18.29, respectively. Heat four featured Nadia Blackmore, who finished fifth in her heat at 2:11.37. The fifth heat featured a plethora of Wildcats, led by Evie DeCarlo, finishing first in the heat at 2:06.01, followed by Manuela Araujo in second at 2:08.47. Kenzie Stute swam a 2:12.74, Sophia Moore a 2:12.87, and Pauline Izydorek at 2:14.74. The final heat featured Julia Zimpel and Nicole Malinova, who swam a 2:16.85 and 2:12.79. Plevak earned an alternate to the top 24, Izydorek and Zimpel in the C final, Moore, Stute, and Blackmore earned a spot in the B finals, and Araujo, and DeCarlo earned a spot in the A final.

The 50 free rounded out the morning with seven heats and 52 swimmers. NMU began in heat three, and it was Annie Devine finishing second with a 24.93. Heat five saw Joanne Arbic and Anna Karubas, who posted times of 24.04 and 25.84. Heat six featured Vicky Burda, Abby Keen, and Tegan Rose, who posted times of 24.07, 24.13, and 24.78. Heat seven saw Phini Schneider, Laura Stockinger, and Brooklyn Millward, posting times of 24.21, 24.11, and 24.99. Arbic earned the last spot in the A final, followed by Burda, Stockinger, Keen, and Schneider in the B final, and Rose and Devine in the C final.
