PREVIEW: Huskies In Town

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer Team is finishing its five-game home stretch with a match against UP rival, Michigan Tech.

The Wildcats (3-3-4, 3-2-1 GLIAC) are coming off a four-point weekend that saw the team move up in the conference standings. The 'Cats stormed back for a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Ferris State on Friday before settling for a 3-3 draw against the Cardinals on Sunday. With the weekend results, the 'Cats enter the one-game weekend with 10 points, tied with Ferris State for third in the conference.

The Huskies (1-8-1,1-4-1 GLIAC ) are traveling to Marquette after a hard weekend with back-to-back losses, with MTU falling to both Saginaw Valley and Ferris State at home. The team faced intense competition, with the final scores of both games being 1-2. The Huskies enter the weekend on a four-game losing streak, with the majority of their games being at home. MTU has only had two contests on the road, where they are undefeated.

Hear From Coach Egolf
"I think we learned a lot about ourselves [over the weekend]. We have a lot of fight and a lot of grit in our team, and I think we showed that."

Last Time Out
Northern is coming off a great stretch of games, with their first game of the weekend ending in a win against Ferris State. Hannah Kastamo scored back-to-back goals less than 5 minutes apart in the final 10 minutes to play, securing only the second Wildcat comeback vs the Bulldogs in program history. The 'Cats got a full 90 minutes from Gretchen Ellis, Carly Sides, Addison Wargo, and Irene Kiilunen

The game against SVSU was a windy affair, with the athletes fighting through gusts of up to 30 miles per hour. NMU had the wind to start and went into the half with a 2-0 lead, with goals being scored by Kastamo and Madison Bilbia. Kastamo kept her GLIAC scoring streak alive, with her goals being her third consecutive game with a goal. Kiilunen opened the scoring in the second half, extending the 'Cats lead to 3-0 in the first five minutes coming out of the break, but the Cardinals came back with a vengeance. SVSU scored three goals in the final 33 minutes of play, and the 'Cats would settle for a draw.

Looking At Our Opponent
Michigan Tech has primarily had home games to open the 2025 campaign, with its only two away games happening against Parkside and Roosevelt towards the beginning of the season. Tech tied against Parkside in a 1-1 finish. They won the game against Roosevelt with a finish of 3-1. The rest of MTU's games have been at home in Houghton. The team hits the road this weekend for their game against NMU.

Leading lady for the Huskies offense is Peyton Wetzel, who paces the team with eight points on three goals and two assists. Wetzel enters the weekend on a two-game point streak, notching assists in back-to-back games. Alongside Wetzel is Reilly Lovercheck, who is also riding a two-game point streak, scoring goals in back-to-back contests. Bri Barrows is the Husky in goal, with 52 total saves and a .776 save percentage.

Northern leads the all-time series between the two sides, holding a 15-9-4 record. The Wildcats are currently riding an eight-game unbeaten streak, are 9-1-2 in the last twelve meetings, and have not lost at home to the Huskies since September 30, 2018.
