Wildcats set relay record, roar at Karl Schlender Invite

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Northern Michigan women's track and field team competed at the Karl Schlender Invite in Wisconsin, placing second of eight teams.

NMU collected a total of 154.5 points. Host UW-Whitewater took top honors with 171.5 points. Northern had six first-places finishes, six more runner-up placements, and two finishing in third.

The highlight finish was a new school record in the 4x200m relay as the group of Ellyse Wolfrath, Ciara Ostrenga, Ahna Larson, Kanya Campbell finished in a time of 1:44.64 for a new school benchmark.

Track Events
The Wildcats went first and second in the 60m hurdles. Ellyse Wolfrath claimed top honors with a time of 8.74 while Crystal Walker placed second in a time of 9.16. Ahna Larson also placed fifth at 9.57. Wolfrath ran the preliminary round in a time of 8.66, an NCAA provisional mark good enough for 11th in the country.

In the 3000m, Emma Sweeney earned first place with a time of 10:44.95. Also finding the podium was Anya VanSweden with a time of 10:54.37. Skylar Grubb also took fourth in a time of 10:55.19.

In the mid-distance races, NMU collected three second-place finishes. In the 600m, Beverly Harper finished in 1:39.25, Lola Korpi crossed at 2:35.30 in the 800m, and Lamar Gordon crossed in 5:16.25 in the mile. 

Northern had three top-3 finishes in relays: First in the 4x200m with a time of 1:44.64, first in the Distance Medley in a time of 12:59.64, and second in the 4x400m at 4:28.01. The 4x200m relay, consisting of Ellyse Wolfrath, Ciara Ostrenga, Ahna Larson, Kanya Campbell, was a new school record.

Field Events
Alayna Vandegriff collected her first career win in the triple jump, reaching a distance of 10.69m.

Walker earned the gold medal finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.57m. 

NMU went second and third in the pole vault. Emily Czeiszperger took second with a mark of 3.42 followed by Rebecca Lane claiming third at 3.27m.

Up Next
NMU will head downstate to take part in the Jet's Pizza Invite hosted by Saginaw Valley from January 31 - February 1.
