GLIAC Quarterfinal Preview: No. 11 NMU vs PNW

NMU won regular the season title for the first time in program histroy, earns no. 1 seed in GLIAC

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The no. 11 Northern Michigan University women's soccer team is set to host the Purdue Northwest Pride for the first round of the GLIAC playoffs on Monday. Kick-off will be at 1 p.m. in the Superior Dome.

The Wildcats (13-1-4, 9-1-4) downed rival Michigan Tech on Thursday 1-0 to secure the number-one seed for the tournament. The Pride (2-13-3, 0-12-2) come into the matchup as the number eight seed.

If the Wildcats win, the team will host the remainder of the GLIAC tournament, starting Friday, November 10, with the finals on Sunday, November 12.

  • The Wildcats captured the program's first-ever GLIAC regular season title after defeating MTU on Thursday. They also tied a season-high in wins with 13
  • Molly Pistorius continues to be at the top of the GLIAC goal totals with her ten tallies and 24 points. Across the conference, Molly is tied for second in shots (57) and game-winning goals (3). 
  • Forward Hannah Kastamo continues to impress in her sophomore season, as she is T4 in the GLIAC in goals (6) T5 in points (15), and T2 in assists (4)
  • Stephanie Trujillo has contributed majorly to the Wildcat's success this season, as she has five goals and four assists for 14 points. She scored the game-winning goal against Michigan Tech on Thursday
  • Redshirt-Freshman goalkeeper Jillian Thompson sits first across the GLIAC in shutouts with 12, an NMU record for most shutouts in a season, good for T2 nationally. Her 1,620 minutes played this season puts her at T1 nationally and leads the GLIAC. Across the GLIAC, Thompson also leads the standings in wins (12).
  • Gwen Kiilunen remains the only Wildcat who has played almost all 1,6200 minutes through the first 18 matches; she currently stands at 1,614. Maria Storm and Isabelle Brusilow follow behind in time played, with 1,577 and 1,524 respectively.
  • As a team, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 32-8 and outshot their opponents 296-102. The Wildcats lead the GLIAC in total goals scored (32), shots (296), shutouts (12), and assists (24).
  • The 'Cats have continued to use its home turf as an advantage, going 18-0-6 in its previous 24 home matches
  • The 'Cats are 5-4 in post-season play since Jon Sandoval took over, including two GLIAC championship appearances and one NCAA tournament appearance. The 'Cats are 3-0 at home in the post season over that span. If you were to remove the one NCAA tournament appearance and GVSU from the equation, the 'Cats are 5-0 in that same span
A Look at Purdue Northwest
The Pride has struggled this season in putting any sort of success together, as the team is bottom of the GLIAC in goals, goals-for-average, points, and they have conceded the most goals and have the worst goals against average. The Pride are 0-12-2 in GLIAC play and haven't won a match since September 2nd.

Kaci Pampreen leads the Pride with five goals and three assists for 13 points with 766 minutes of playing time in 17 games. Pampreen has a goal and an assist in her last two matches. Meta Fischer has appeared in 16 matches for the Pride and holds a 2.26 GAA with three shutouts.

The Wildcats are on a nine-game win streak against the pride, most recently with a 1-0 decision in Hammond, Indiana. In the last nine matches, the 'Cats have outscored the Pride 32-1, along with scoring at least three goals a game at home going back to 2021 (3-0, 3-0, 8-0, 6-0). The 'Cats are 6-0-3 at home this season, and the Pride are 0-6-1 on the road.
