Women's Soccer Denies All Opponent Shot Opportunities in 1-0 Win

Box Score

MARQUETTE, Mich – Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer controlled the match from the opening whistle when they defeated Northwood University 1-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Saturday evening.

  NO SHOTS FOR YOU

The Wildcats did not allow the visiting Timberwolves to get a single shot off in the match.

One of the big reasons for that impressive statistic is the fact NMU was able to hold possession of the ball for 62-percent of the contest.

The defense for the Wildcats delivered in making sure Northwood had little to no opportunities and kept the Timberwolves from being able to put together a successful attack.

  WILDCAT GOAL

The game-winning goal came in the second half in the 59th minute.

Following an NMU throw-in from 35 yards out, Isabela Cardoso faked out a NU defender by making a hard right. Once she made it in the box she beat two more defenders and kicked the ball to Caroline Halonen.

Halonen, centered a little over three yards away from the goal, kicked the ball over the Timberwolves goalie and into the back of the net for the match's lone goal.

  STAT LEADERS

As a team, the Wildcats had 22 total shots to Northwood's zero. In the first half, NMU had 12 and in the second they notched 10.

The shot leader for the Wildcats was Halonen. The junior racked up 11 shots, with six coming on goal. Cardoso was next with three total shots and one on target.

Evelyn Flor tallied two shots that were both on goal while Rachael Erste added two shots with one coming on target.

Stephanie Trujillo, Natalie Stampfly, Brooke Pietila, and Isabelle Brusilow each took a single shot.

NMU was also the only team to take any corner kicks. The Wildcats had three in the match.

Goalkeeper Shenae Kreps played all 90 in the net for NMU. She was instrumental in her defensive play limiting the TImberwolves.

  UP NEXT

The Wildcats finish the regular season with home matches on Friday and Sunday. NMU welcomes Purdue Northwest to Marquette on Friday at 1 p.m. and Parkside Sunday at 4 p.m.
