DETROIT, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Women's Basketball team visited Wayne State University for Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action but fourth quarter shooting woes hurt the Wildcats as they fell 64-50.

Leading the Wildcats was sophomore Erin Honkala (Howell, Mich.), who finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman Lexi Smith (St. Germain, Wis./Northland Pines) added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Warriors took an early lead, and eventually got ahead 15-8 with less than two minutes to go in the quarter.  Junior Taylor Hodell (Wausau, Wis./DC Everett) then made a layup, followed by a Smith jumper to get the deficit to just three points, 15-12.  However, the hosts answered with a bucket to go ahead 17-12 entering the first quarter.

The teams went two minutes before a score in the second half until Honkala made a layup, but the Warriors answered. Smith responded with another basket, but WSU replied with a three pointer to go ahead 22-16. Schultz then converted a layup, followed by a three by freshman Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis.) to make it 22-21 with 4:46 to go in the half.

The hosts managed to get ahead by five, but a three-point play by junior Sydney Dillinger (Houghton, Mich) made it 30-28. WSU scored again, but Hodell's jumper made it 32-30 with 1:57 left in the quarter. To close out the half, Honkala made a layup to answer two Warrior free throws and sent the game into halftime with a WSU lead, 34-32.  

Smith started the third quarter with two free throws to tie the game at 34-34 at the 8:54 mark.  After two Warrior free throws, Honkala made another layup to tie it at 36-36.  The hosts responded with a four-point run, but Lutz answered with a layup, followed by a three-pointer by sophomore Emily Schramek (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) to give NMU their first lead of the game, 41-40 with 4:21 to go in the quarter.  The teams traded baskets, but WSU managed to re-take the lead and took a 48-46 lead into the final frame.

The Wildcats were unable to get their shots to fall in the fourth quarter, resulting in a 64-50 final score victory for the Warriors.

NMU is now 8-10 on the season and 4-6 in the GLIAC while the Warriors move to 13-4, 8-3 during league play.  The Wildcats next game is yet to be determined as they await information prior to rescheduling their game with Davenport University.
