Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer (0-3, 0-0 GLIAC) dropped their 2017 home-opener to the University of Minnesota Duluth Friday afternoon, 2-0.
For the third-consecutive contest, freshman goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wisconsin) faced a high-powered offense with the Bulldogs recording seven shots in the first half. Of the seven shots, five were on-goal with Frontuto recording five saves.
With the Wildcats unable to record a shot in the opening half, neither team was able to score for more than two thirds of the contest. In the 70th-minute, UMD broke the scoreless tie on a corner kick that resulted in a header to the back of the net.
Less than a minute later, the Wildcats went down, 2-0, off another corner kick that deflected off an NMU player into the goal. Northern Michigan failed to cut the deficit, falling 2-0.
Offensively, senior midfielder Abby Cook (DeWitt, Michigan) recorded a pair of shots in the second half, one on target. senior forward Madison Hamilla (Gaylord, Michigan) recorded a single shot on the afternoon.
Frontuto would finish the game having faced 13 shots, 10 on goal. The freshman made eight saves on the day, bringing her total for the season up to 16. That number currently sits at second best in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
NMU looks to split the weekend at home on Sunday when they host another Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference school in Bemidji State University (1-0, 0-0 NSIC). The Beavers take on Michigan Tech University Friday evening. Game time for the NMU-BSU matchup is slated for 3 p.m.
