Wildcats Fall to Eagles in Wind and Rain

Box Score

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer (2-9-2, 1-4-2 GLIAC) dropped a Sunday afternoon matchup, 4-1, with Ashland University (9-4-1, 6-1 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon in windy, rainy weather to end their weekend.

The Wildcat defense had their hands full early as Ashland put five of their seven shots in the opening half on-goal. Freshman goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wisconsin) recorded four saves in the opening half.

Ashland took the lead in the 28th-minute when the Eagles Morgan Bittengle worked her way around the defense from the corner to the top of the box before finding the back of the net for her first goal of the game.

NMU recorded three shots in the half but failed to put one on-target. Senior forward Madison Hamilla (Gaylord, Michigan), freshman midfielder Andrea Sekloch (Casco, Michigan) and senior midfielder Abby Cook (DeWitt, Michigan) each recorded a shot in the half.

Bittengle wasted little time giving the Eagles some insurance in the second half scoring her second goal at the 55-minute mark. Eventually, Bittengale would find a third goal in the 69th-minute to puts AU up 4-0.

Freshman defender Julia Jonassen (Rydeback, Sweden) ended the shutout and the NMU scoreless game streak with a goal in the 72nd. Senior defender Allyssa Milam (Williamston, Michigan) took the ball up the sideline to the corner before sending it to Jonassen in front of the goal for the score. It was Jonassen's first career goal, while Milam recorded her second assist of the year.

In goal, Frontuto finished the game with six saves to bring her season total to 65, currently good enough for fourth best in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic conference.

NMU ends their home season next weekend hosting a pair of GLIAC foes. On Friday Ferris State University comes to Marquette, Michigan, for a late afternoon matchup beginning at 4 p.m. Senior Day for the Wildcats will be Sunday against Grand Valley State University at 1 p.m.
