Wildcat Women's Soccer Falls 3-2 in Overtime to Winona State

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women's soccer team fell to Winona State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.

With two minutes left in the game, the Wildcats forced overtime on a goal by Carmen Villarruel. In a crowd of players inside the box, Villarruel came up with the ball and fired it into the back of the net to tie the game, 2-2.

But it was Winona State's Meg Riebau who scored the last point of the match with about five minutes left in overtime. 

The teams combined to take 19 shots in a back-and-forth opening half. The Wildcats finally broke through with less than a minute left to take a 1-0 lead. Off a free kick, Allyssa Milam sent a high shot that flew just outside of Rachel Oleson's reach. 

Winona State immediately answered back when Alyssa Reynolds scored a goal off her own rebound in the 47th minute in the second. The Warriors took the lead when Kenzie Rose set the ball in off a Abby Bohanski corner kick in the 84th minute

Caroline Glantz made 12 saves. Winona State finished the game with a 15-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The Wildcats next play Bemidji State Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Complex in Bemidji, Minn.
