Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — Chloe Tompkins matched her career high with 17 points, but the Northern Michigan women's basketball team could not overcome GLIAC North leader Grand Valley State, falling by a 70-49 margin Thursday night at the Berry Events Center.
The Lakers, who were bolstered by a 23-point performance by Taylor Parmley, outscored the Wildcats, 15-6, in the second quarter to take a 31-19 lead into the break. Though they cut the deficit to as few as four in the third quarter, the Wildcats never were able to take the lead.
Northern Michigan mounted a furious comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers, 21-15. The Wildcats closed out the quarter on an 11-9 run, with Bre Gaspervich netting all but one of their points on a pair of three-pointers and two layups.
A pair of Taylor Hodell free throws at the start of the fourth quarter drew Northern Michigan within four, but the Lakers outscored the Wildcats, 24-9, in the final frame to secure their 12th GLIAC victory.
Gaspervich, who was coming off a 21-point effort and last-second game-winning layup against Michigan Tech, finished with 13 points. Tompkins and Darby Youngstrom tied for the team lead with seven rebounds.
Grand Valley State scored 44 of its point in the paint, double Northern Michigan's total.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 9-13 (8-8 GLIAC). They return to action Saturday when they kick off a Northern Michigan basketball-hockey triple header with an 11 a.m. contest against Ferris State.
