Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's basketball team fell to Northwood, 55-49, Saturday at the Berry Events Center.
Northwood opened the game running the floor to a quick 5-0 advantage in the opening minutes. Darby Youngstrom got the scoring started for the Wildcats to make the score 5-2 at the 8:42 mark. The Timberwolves then built an 11-7 lead with 5:14 to play. Northern Michigan battled back to take their first lead of contest after Chloe Tompkins found Sydney Dillinger in the corner for a triple, 12-11, with 1:23 to play in the quarter. Northwood held a 15-12 advantage after one quarter of play.
The Timberwolves opened the quarter growing their lead to five, 20-15, with 6:16 to play in the half. A pair of Hodell free throws tied the game at 20 with 3:48 on the clock. Following a Northwood missed three pointer, Youngstrom connected with Taylor Hodell in the paint for the layup to steal back the lead, at 22-20. Northern Michigan took a 25-22 lead into the dressing room at the half.
The teams found themselves deadlocked at 29 at the 6:14 mark of the third quarter. Northwood then went on a 5-0 run to give themselves a 34-30 lead. The Wildcats battled back cutting the deficit to two, after Youngstrom found Kendall Martenet down low for the layup, 35-33, with 2:55 to play in the quarter. The Wildcats trailed, 39-37, after three quarters of play.
Northwood opened the final frame growing their lead to five, 46-41, with 6:22 remaining. Hodell was able to knock down a pair of free throws to draw within three, 46-43, at the 6:01 mark. On the following possession, Lindsay Orwat connected on a triple to put the Timberwolves up six, 49-43.
After a Bre Gaspervich made free throw, the Wildcats capitalized on a Northwood turnover creating a Hodell layup, cutting the lead to three, 49-46, with 4:50 remaining. The Timberwolves answered by growing a seven point, 53-46, lead to put the game out of reach.
Hodell lead the Wildcats with a career-high 19 points While Youngstrom netted 12 points. Gaspervich collected a team-high 10 rebounds and added 8 points.
With the loss, Northern Michigan moves to 13-14 (12-9 GLIAC) on the season. The Wildcat will travel to Michigan Tech on Feb. 25 with tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
