UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — Two minutes into overtime, Casey Durand's header found the back of the net to lift the Northern Michigan women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Saginaw Valley State Sunday afternoon at Braddock Field.

Durand's game-winning goal, the first of her career, came after a Paula Hafner corner kick. A minute earlier, Alexandra Simmons preserved the 1-1 tie by coming up with a save on an Ashley Henderson header.

After a scoreless opening frame in which the teams combined to take just two shots on net, the Cardinals broke through in the 57th minute on a goal by Alexis Hilliard.

The Wildcats responded in the 75th minute, with Allyssa Milam beating Claire Spleth to even the score.

Simmons finished with nine saves. Saginaw Valley State, which entered the game with an 8-3-1 record, had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Durand's goal was her third of the season. She is now tied with Carleigh Hillier and Carmen Villarruel for the team lead.

This was the fourth overtime game Northern Michigan played this season. The Wildcats are now 1-1-2 in matches that went into bonus time.

Northern Michigan remains on the road next weekend, traveling to Ohio to face Walsh (Oct. 14, 7 p.m.) and Lake Erie (Oct. 16, noon).
