NMU Drops Opener To St. Cloud State On Own Goal

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting St. Cloud State in their home opener Friday at the NMU Soccer Field.

The Wildcats gave up an own goal off a corner kick in the 62nd minute (62:40) to give the Huskies the match.

"I was disappointed, I thought at times we were good and then we faded away," said NMU head coach Matt Granstrand. "After two years of not having success we are trying to relearn how to win and it looks like it is going to be a process. I thought this was a game we should have won. Give the credit to St. Cloud State, they had a job well done."

Northern Michigan and St. Cloud State were tied after the first half. The Huskies outshot NMU 6-5 with a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Kim Rietveld led the Wildcats in the first half with three shots.

In the second half, NMU outshot SCSU 8-4 taking the advantage in the match 13-10. Both squads recorded six shots on goal. Rietveld led all players with four shots on goal in the contest. Ally Herod led the Huskies with three shots on goal.

Brittany Plombon made six saves in net for SCSU en route to picking up the win. NMU had two goalies in net sophomore Caroline Glantz started the contest making three saves during the first half while sophomore Alexandra Simmons played the second half with two saves.

Northern Michigan returns to action at noon Sunday hosting Winona State at the NMU Soccer Field.
