Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Minnesota-Crookston Sunday at the NMU Soccer Field.
The Wildcats improved to 1-2-1 on the season while UMC also moved to 1-2-1 overall.
NMU got on the board first when junior defender Hailey Beyrand took a feed from senior defender Kim Rietveld and shot the ball into the net from 20-yards out in the 36th minute (35:40). The shot went straight through the arms of Minnesota-Crookston goalkeeper Lexie Gauger to find the back of the net.
The Golden Eagles netted the equalizer in the 76th minute (75:31) when Erin Mears chipped the ball behind the defense to Courtney Armborst who finished the score from five yards out.
NMU outshot the Golden Eagles 25-9 in the contest and had eight shots on goal to UMC's five. NMU also outshot Minnesota-Crookston 7-2 in the overtime period.
Sophomore midfielder Wynona Maravilla led NMU with seven shots while Beyrand, senior midfielder Ashley Katers and freshman defender Hollie Koning had three shots each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Glantz played the full 120 minutes in net for the Wildcats picking up four saves. Gauger played the full game for the Golden Eagles and pulled in seven saves.
NMU opens GLIAC play next weekend with a trip to Houghton to face off against rival Michigan Tech on Sunday, Sept. 21. Game time is set for noon against the Huskies.
