Box Score QUINCY, Ill. – The Northern Michigan University football team scored 31-unasnwered points, including 14 in the second quarter and 10 in the third to roll to a 31-14 nonconference win over Quincy Saturday at Flinn Stadium.
The Wildcats racked up 377 yards of total offense to move to 1-1 on the season while Quincy fell to 1-1 overall. NMU held Quncy to 296 yards of total offense.
"Really excited to see our kids respond and play really good football in all three phases," said NMU head coach Chris Ostrowsky. "It was a significant improvement from week one to week two."
NMU junior running back Wyatt Jurasin led the way for the Wildcats picking up 135 yards on the ground with two touchdowns while senior wide receiver Kelvin Smarwt hauled in 114 yards on six receptions and a touchdown through the air.
Sophomore quarterback Shaye Brown went 16-23 with 220 yards through the air with one touchdown and an interveption.
Quincy scored first when Chris Harris ran the ball in from seven yards out with 6:36 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
NMU then scored 21-straight points through the rest of the first half to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Brown connected with Smarwt for a 45-yard bomb to score the Wildcats first touchdown of the game with 1:47 left in the first quarter. Following a successful point-after attempt from freshman kicker Ryan LaBerge NMU had the game knotted at seven-all. Junior wide receiver Austin Young then recovered a fumble from NMU junior running back Terrance Dye and ran it in for a two-yard score with 6:23 left in the first half and LaBerge again connected on the PAT to give the Wildcats a 14-7 advantage.
With 42-seconds left in the first half, Jurasin ran the ball in from seven yards out and LaBerge tacked on another PAT to give NMU a 21-7 advantage at the break.
Following a 23-yard rush, Jurasin ran the ball in for a seven-yard touchdown on the Wildcats opening drive of the second half and a LaBege PAT gave NMU a 27-7 advantage which capped the seven-play 65-yard drive.
LaBerge then connected on a 38-yard field goal to cap 31-unanswered points for NMU with 8:32 left in the third quarter.
Quincy managed to score one more touchdown when Nick Lonergan connected with Schoenenberger with 5:32 left in the third quarter.
Junior linebacker Levi Perry led the Wildcats defense with 12 tackles including 10 solo hits, three tackles for loss and one sack. Senior defensive lineman Trever Kruzel had two sacks on the afternoon and six total tackles. Sophomore linebacker Matt Boonstra and junior defensive lineman Dante Holmes also had sacks for the Wildcats.
NMU controlled the clock with 31:39 in time of possession and was 4-10 on third down efficiency while holding Quincy to 3-13 on third downs.
NMU returns to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference action at Hillsdale Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
