Box Score 2 UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University soccer team outshot Saginaw Valley 13-6 but were only able to find the back of the net once as the Wildcats closed out regular season action with a 2-1 loss to the Cardinals Saturday.
The Wildcats will enter the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 8 seed but will await the tournament pairing after the completion of today's games.
"We played well enough to win today. We probably should have scored a few in the first half but were unlucky," said NMU head coach Matt Granstrand. "Season two starts Tuesday and we are looking forward to competing."
All the scoring in the contest happened in just over a seven-minute span in the second half. Saginaw Valley's Alexis Hilliard took a pass from Shelby Watts and Presley Tibbetts inside the box to score the first goal of the game in the 53rd minute (52:28) giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Watts then gave Saginaw Valley a 2-0 lead when she headed in a corner from Emma Webster in the 57th minute (56:12).
NMU sophomore forward Paula Hafner put the Wildcats on the board in the 60th minute (59:48) when she scored her 14th goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Hafner led NMU with six shots in the contest while sophomore Wynona Maravilla had three for the Wildcats, two of which were on goal.
