Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team held No. 10 Grand Valley State scoreless through 55-minutes of action, but the visiting Lakers came away with the only goal of the contest to pick up a 1-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Wildcats Friday.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for NMU who fell to 6-7-1 overall with a 4-5 GLIAC record. Grand Valley picked up its 14th win of the season moving to 14-2 overall with a 9-1 league mark.
Grand Valley State's Dani Johnson took a rebound off a free kick which had been saved by NMU goalkeeper Caroline Glantz and redirected the ricochet back into the net in the 56th minute (55:32) to give the Lakers a 1-0 advantage they carried through the game.
Glantz saved six of the seven shots she faced in the contest. Grand Valley State outshot the Wildcats 18-3 including a 10-1 margin in the opening frame.
NMU senior Ashley Katers had the first look at a goal for Northern Michigan in the 25th minute (24:38) but the shot was hauled in by Lakers goalkeeper Andrea Strauss.
NMU sophomore Paula Hafner also had two looks at the goal one which was saved by Strauss in the 61st minute (60:01) and a second that sailed wide in the last minute of action.
THe Wildcats return to action at noon Sunday when they host Ferris State at the NMU Soccer Field. Prior to kickoff the Wildcats will honor their six departing seniors in their senior day celebration.
