Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team completes its regular season of play this weekend with a set of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games on the road in Ohio. The Wildcats play at Walsh University on Friday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. and at Malone University on Sunday (Nov. 3) at noon.
NMU is 4-9-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the conference after a tie and loss over the weekend at home. In Friday's (Oct. 25) game, the Wildcats ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Ferris State. On Sunday, Grand Valley shut out NMU, 3-0.
Freshman Paula Hafner leads NMU in goals with seven on the season while senior Nicole Musi adds three. Six other Wildcats have goals this season. In addition to Hafner's seven goals she has recorded five assists and freshman Carmen Villarruel has four. Freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons has 55 saves between the pipes in 12 games and three wins.
Walsh (3-5, 3-4 GLIAC) swept its two games over the weekend on the road. The Cavaliers defeated Tiffin, 6-2 on Friday and shut out Findlay, 2-0 on Sunday. Jessie Gearhart and Emily Durina each have five goals for Walsh, while Lea Jalbert has four. At goalie, Michaella Stucky has 63 saves and Dani Shambaugh has 30.
Malone (4-10-1, 1-9-0) was defeated in both of its games on the road last weekend. The Pioneers fell 2-0 to Findlay on Friday and 1-0 to Tiffin on Sunday. Christine Najjar leads Malone with six goals and Brianna Smith has four. Goalie Staci Hackett has stopped the ball 98 times, starting in all 15 games.
The Wildcats shutout Malone in Marquette, 7-0 last season in the first ever meeting last season. Taylor Smith, Kim Rietveld and Heather Amr each had goals in the game. NMU faced Walsh for the first time last season. The Cavaliers took the game, 1-0 in Marquette.
