Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University swept its weekend at home on Sunday (Oct. 13), after defeating Saginaw Valley State University. The Wildcats won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game 4-1 after three goals from junior Nicole Musi and a goal and an assist from freshman Paula Hafner. NMU improves to 4-6-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the GLIAC.
Musi scored two goals in a two-minutes span late in the first half. Her first of the season came at 36:42 after being setup by Hafner. At 38:10, Musi scored off a free kick from sophomore Kim Rietveld for the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Hafner knocked in her sixth goal of the season at 47:00 on a shot from the middle of the box from freshman Wynona Maravilla. At 60:07, Musi tallied her third goal of the game, again from Hafner, on shot from the left side of the net.
With seven minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals got on the board with a shot by Olive Perrin. Her shot came from the center of the box on an unassisted play.
NMU had eight shots on the afternoon and the Cardinals had 12. NMU freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons finished with six saves and SVSU's Kailey Naumcheff had three.
Hafner is on an eight-game point streak. She has six goals and five assists and NMU is 4-2-1 during the streak.
The Wildcats travel to Ohio for a pair of conference games this upcoming weekend, playing against Ohio Dominican on Friday (Oct. 18) and Ashland on Sunday (Oct. 20).
