Wildcats close out California on Saturday

CALIFORNIA – On the final day for the NMU Track & Field team on the West Coast, the Wildcats had seven individuals competing against strong competition from across the country at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Long Beach Invitational. 

The Wildcats had several notable results on the weekend, highlighted by a new school record in shot put from Danielle Lund on Thursday (13.69m) along with a near school record from Lamar Gordon in today's 1500m.

Bryan Clay Invitational - Azusa, California 
Lamar Gordon ran a 4:30.74 time in the 1500m, taking 16th of 188 runners. That mark was just .07 seconds off the school record time of 4:30.67. Ashley Choponis was 99th with a time of 4:39.86 followed by Ella DeBruyn in 101st with a time of 4:40.23.

In the 200m, Baux Truckey finished in 42nd in a field of 85 with a time of 24.845. 

Danielle Lund performed superbly in the shot put as she finished in seventh place out of a field of over 30. Her final distance for the event was 13.00m. She hit a mark of 41.74m in the discus, placing 16th.  

In the javelin throw, Teiolla Harvey finished in ninth with a distance of 37.39m. 

On Friday, three 'Cats competed in the 5000m across three separate races. Sophia Potter finished in 17:19.08, Madi Szymanski at 17:31.53, and Dani VanLente crossed at 18:18.53. 

Beverly Harper and Lamar Gordon each competed in the 800m. Harper finished 57th in her race with a time of 2:11.81, while Gordon's 2:14.41 was good for 49th in her race. 

Alayna Vandegriff was the lone field competitor for NMU on Friday. In the triple jump, her distance of 11.31m was 21st of 37 scorers. 

On Thursday, Potter and Szymanski each raced in the 10000m. It was an impressive outing for Potter as she crossed the finish line at 36:12.57 for sixth place in her race of 28 competitors. Szymanski ran in a separate race, clocking in at 37:31.57.


Long Beach Invitational - Long Beach, California 
The lone NMU competitor in Long Beach was Beverly Harper, who finished 12th in the 800m with a time of 2:21.64.

Next weekend, the Wildcats will return to the Midwest for the St. Norbert Invite in De Pere, Wisconsin.
