PREVIEW: Wildcats head to Grand Valley for GLIAC Semifinals

MARQUETTE, Mich. – With a 74-66 victory over Michigan Tech in the GLIAC Quarterfinals, the Northern Michigan Wildcats will now head to Grand Valley State to take on the No. 1 Lakers on Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m.

The winner will advance to play in the GLIAC Championship on Sunday, March 8. They will play the winner of No. 2 Wayne State vs. No. 3 Ferris State, who match up at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. 

The Wildcats (25-6) have their most wins since the 1999-2000 season. Now, NMU will turn its attention to the Grand Valley State Lakers, who sit at 28-1. NMU has lost both matchups with GVSU this season. 

The game will be streamed on FloCollege and can also be heard live on 94.9 The Bay, with Dave VanNoord on the call.

About the 'Cats
The Wildcats defeated Michigan Tech 74-66 in Wednesday's quarterfinals. It marked the first time that Northern defeated the Huskies three times in one season. Sydney Whitehouse led the way with a career-high 25 points while Sarah Newcomer surpassed 1,000 career points, joining Jacy Weisbrod and Alyssa Hill on the 1K point club this season. 

In regular-season play, Weisbrod was the nation's three-point leader. Her 103 made triples led all of Division II and Division I players, while her 3.42 makes per game is second. Weisbrod is leading the GLIAC with 16.8 points per game, and her 40.8% three-point percentage is third. She has 12 games with 20+ points and 15 games making at least four triples. 

Sarah Newcomer follows with an impressive 75 made threes. She ranks top-30 nationally in both made threes and three-point percentage. Her 11.3 points per game are second on the Wildcats. 

CJ Romero holds a 2.3 assist/turnover ratio, the best in the conference and 12th nationally. Her 4.7 assists per game rank second in the conference. She leads the way for a Wildcat group that is third nationally in turnovers per game (11.9) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.26). Alyssa Hill is fourth throughout the league with 7.7 rebounds per game and has totaled 29 rebounds over the last two.

The Wildcats fell to Grand Valley 78-66 on Jan. 3, and 70-47 on Jan. 29 in Allendale. 


The Rest of the Field
GVSU defeated Lake Superior State 89-45 in the Quarterfinals. They are 28-1 this season and ranked No. 2 in the country.

The No. 2-seeded Warriors knocked off Roosevelt 75-56 in the opening round. At 23-6, Wayne State is receiving votes in the national poll. 

As the No. 3 seed, the Bulldogs defeated Parkside 82-74. At 25-5 overall, Ferris State sits at No. 16 nationally.
