Weekend Recap in NMU Athletics: 9/4 - 9/7

Men's and women's soccer remain undefeated, volleyball wraps up Florida trip, cross country opens the season, and more!

Football (0-2 overall, 0-0 GLIAC)
  • 18-23 loss vs. Northwood [Recap]
In another tightly contested game, it was the air attack that worked for the Wildcats; Duke Shovald threw for 232 yards and a touchdown, while Noah Dobert accounted for 89 of the 'Cats 164 rushing yards. NMU outgained the Timberwolves 396 to 255 and had 10 more first downs, but the 'Cats turned the ball over three times (2 INT, 1 FUM) to the 'Wolves none.


Volleyball (1-3 overall, 0-0 GLIAC)

The Wildcats season opened in Pensacola, Florida, at the Spring Hill Suites Invite. The 'Cats opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Wheeling, led by Allie Barlow garnering 55 assists, and Kaysie Bakke (17), McKenzie Gruner (15), Sydney Bartels (13), and Emma Gulock (8) all hitting career-bests in kills. Madison York (14) and Gulock (11) notched career-best kills in the 1-3 loss to Spring Hill, Liesel Haugen added 20 digs in the loss to Southwest Minnesota State, and and Gulock recorded 2.5 of NMU's six total blocks in the loss to West Florida. 


Men's Soccer (1-0-1 overall, 0-0 GLIAC)

It was a cold, rainy, and blustery weekend for the Wildcats home-opening pair of matches on the shores of Lake Superior. The 'Cats earned the first clean sheet of the campaign against Northwood, as goalkeeper Asaf Kristal made four saves in his NMU debut. The 'Cats picked up its first win of 2025 two days later, with Teun Van Gansewinkel opening scoring in the first half before Davian Gumbs broke the tie and scored the game winning goal late in the contest. 


Women's Soccer (0-0-2 overall, 0-0 GLIAC)

  • 0-0 draw vs. Minnesota Duluth [Recap]
Similar to the men, the women's team also experienced Upper Peninsula weather on the shores of Gitchigumi, playing through heavy wind and some on and off rain for the first two matches of the season. First year head coach Erin Egolf remained undefeated in her Wildcat tenure, securing a pair of draws against NSIC opponents. Hometown product, Isabella Lorens, scored the equalizer against the Huskies, while Jillian Thompson and the 'Cats earned the first clean sheet of the season against the Bulldogs.


Cross Country
  • Phoenix Open, 2nd of 9 teams [Recap]
The 'Cats opened the season in Green Bay, Wisconsin, finishing second of nine teams with 54 points, trailing only St. Thomas with 47. Madi Szymanski led the way in fifth place with a time of 22:14.8, followed by freshman Ashley Choponis finishing 7th at 22:31.8 in an impressive debut. Lamar Gordon and Sophia Potter finished 11th and 12th, respectively.
