Wildcats and Bulldogs Play to Scoreless Draw

NMU earns first clean sheet under new head coach Erin Egolf

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU women's soccer team faced off against the University of Minnesota Duluth to round out opening weekend, with the Sunday clash ending in a scoreless draw.

The Wildcats (0-0-2 overall, 0-0 GLIAC) walk away undefeated after a weekend of competition while remaining on the hunt for the first win under head coach Erin Egolf. The Bulldogs (1-0-1 overall, 0-0 NSIC) remain undefeated to open their 2025 campaign as well, as the team faced off against Michigan Tech on Friday, winning 1-0 over the Huskies.

The 'Cats earned the first clean sheet under Egolf and the new campaign, with goalkeeper Jillian Thompson stopping all three saves on frame, her first shutout since November 12, 2023. Thompson had to remain sharp, as two of her three saves came within the final 15 minutes of play.

Leading the offensive charge was junior forward Madison Bilbia, who paced all student-athletes with four shot attempts and two on target. Bilbia had a pair of almost identical chances to score, both right-footed attempts from just outside of the box that curled toward the bottom left corner. The first attempt narrowly missed the post, while the second was labeled for the bottom corner if not for the outstretched finger of goalkeeper Kaycee Chavez.

Four field players recorded a full ninety minutes of play: Hannah Kastamo, Addison Wargo, Irene Kiilunen, and Ava Buhlman. Kenna Alexander (85), Gretchen Ellis (83), Alyse Daavettila (82), and Bilbia (75) all recorded significant minutes and played massive roles for Egolf as well.

Both teams were even offensively, with NMU having a slight edge in shots (6-5) and shots on goal (4-3), while UMD had four corner kicks to two. The 'Cats were more disciplined today, only recording four fouls to the 'Dogs 11. Miriam Marsan of UMD was booked with the lone yellow card.

A pair of 'Cats made their 2025 debut, as Emma Kastamo and Olivia Moreno both logged crucial minutes from the bench; Kastamo played the final 21 minutes of action, while Moreno logged six minutes, all of those coming in the final ten minutes of play.
