PREVIEW: Wildcats set to welcome UWP and PNW to the Berry

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's basketball team (13-7, 7-4) will look to stay in the win column as they get ready to host UW-Parkside (12-7, 7-4) on Thursday, February 8 at 5:30 p.m. The Cats' will then prepare to host Purdue Northwest (9-12, 4-7) on Saturday, February 10 at 11 a.m. 

There will be a poster signing in the Wildcat Room following Saturday's game. All are welcome to attend!

Last Time Out
Northern was last on the court on February 1st against Lake Superior State. The Wildcats led wire-to-wire and won every quarter, with the most separation being created early on with a 22-13 lead through 10 minutes and a 39-22 gap at halftime. The Cats would go on to win in dominating fashion 73-50. NMU imposed its will on the glass, clearing LSSU in rebounds 44-25. NMU pulled down 19 on the offensive end, tying a season-high. Jacy Weisbrod scored 25 points and Makaylee Kuhn added another 18 to lead the Northern Michigan women's basketball team. 


Cat Nips
  • Northern takes care of the ball as well as any team in the country. They lead the GLIAC in fewest turnovers/game (11.6), which is the second best mark in the country. Northern is second in the conference in rebounding margin (7.3) and third in FT percentage (76.1%). As a team, NMU allows just 5.9 offensive rebounds/game to opponents, the fewest across conference teams. 
  • With such few turnovers, the Wildcats sit 11th in the country with a 1.19 assist/turnover ratio. 
  • Makaylee Kuhn is second in the conference averaging 16.6 ppg and is fourth at seven rpg. Kuhn is 85-104 (81.7%) from the free throw line this season, good for seventh in the GLIAC. She is a three-time All-GLIAC First Teamer and was named to the Preseason First Team. 
  • After struggling from the three-point line a season ago where they went just 121-454 (26.7%), the 'Cats have made tremendous progress beyond the arc so far this season, as they are second in the GLIAC in made threes (157-470 - 33.4%). Jacy Weisbrod has led the way from downtown, as she is first in the GLIAC with 53 made threes and made at least one in all 17 games she has played. Sarah Newcomer is not far behind, as she has made a triple in all but two games this season and her 38 triples is tied for third across GLIAC competition.
  • Mackenzie Holzwart is averaging 7.2 ppg, 3.7 apg, and 5.9 rpg. Holzwart also leads the team with 19 steals on the season. She is eighth  in the GLIAC in total assists and is first among conference guards in defensive rebounds (4.6). 
  • The Green and Gold present a balanced scoring attack, as nine different 'Cats have recorded a double-digit output game this season.
  • Ana Rhude ranks third in the conference in blocks (24). 

Notes on Parkside
The Rangers enter this weekend at 12-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play. Parkside has gone 4-3 on the road, as they gear up to head to Marquette. Parkside averages the most points in the conference at 74.9 points/game, while allowing just 64.9 points/game. The Rangers rank first in field goal percentage (46.6%) in the GLIAC, a top-10 mark in the country.  

UWP presents a balanced attack, with two averaging in double figures and five contributing at least six points each game. Senior guard Paty Gallasova paces the way with 11.7 ppg, while Sheridan Flauger orchestrates the offense averaging 3.4 apg and 11.8 ppg.

In the last meeting between the two earlier this season, Northern defeated Parkside on the road 83-76. NMU scored a single-quarter season-high 28 points in the second while also holding Parkside to a single-quarter season-low of six points in the same quarter. NMU held the rangers to shooting just 2-9 (22.2%) while forcing the Rangers into committing eight turnovers in the second. Jacy Weisbrod scored a career high, pouring in 27 points on 9-16 shooting and a 6-10 clip from beyond the arc. Makaylee Kuhn added 20 points on the night. Sherdian Flauger led the way for the Rangers scoring 18 points, majority from the charity stripe (10-12). 


Notes on Purdue Northwest
Purdue Northwest sits at 9-12 on the season and 4-7 in the GLIAC, dropping three of its last five games. Purdue Northwest is 3-5 when away from its home court. The Pride shoot 41.8% from the field, 31.6% from three, and 74.2% from the charity stripe.

The Pride are seventh in scoring in the conference at 61.6 points/game. They are led by forward Dash Shaw who is averaging 17.7 points/game which leads the GLIAC in scoring. UP native senior forward Mercedes Simmons is second in command averaging 16.3 points/game along with 8.9 rebounds/game. Simmons currently leads the conference in blocks (54), and field goals made (143-258). 

In the last meeting between the two earlier this season, the Cats' defeated the Pride 76-62.  NMU controlled the glass, pulling down 38 rebounds to PNW's 27, including ten more on the offensive end. This led to a dominating 17-0 mark in second chance points. Jacy Weisbrod scored a career-high 24 points in the dramatic victory, shooting 7-11 from the floor including a 5-8 mark from three and seven rebounds. The Pride's offense was led by Mercedes Simmons scoring 21 points on 9-15 shooting from the field, while she also pulled down nine rebounds.
