ALMA, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team competed at the Alma Open on Saturday, where
Zhivanna Magdaleno and
Alissa Caltagirone earned top finishes in their respective weight classes to highlight a team victory for the Wildcats over eight other competitors. Three others finished in second place at the event.
Magdaleno went a perfect 5-0 in the 123 weight class for a gold medal finish. She earned two victories by fall, two more by tech fall, and the last one by forfeit to stand atop her class.
Another top spot was earned in the 143, as
Alissa Caltagirone went 3-0 with a victory over teammate
Marisa Angelos, who finished second, in the championship match.
Abigale Swanson went 3-2 in the 170 weight class to finish in second place.
Sharon Leon garnered a 1-1 record in the 130 weight class, also finishing in second place. In the 130, Samatha Chaon would also get a victory to earn third-place.
Mickaela Keane went 3-2 against competition in the 170 to take fourth place.
Trinity Valentin earned two victories at 109, also ending in a fourth-place result.
The Wildcats scored 173 points, besting the 131 from Michigan Revolution in second and the 114 from Tiffin in third. The 'Cats notched nine pins as a team, the most of any school. Magdaleno and Caltagirone each recorded two.
