Northern Earns Plenty of All-Americans as Women Take 16th, Men 25th at Swim & Dive NCAA Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. – The NMU Swim and Dive team hit the road this week for the national competitions in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. The women grabbed a 16th place finish overall while the men were 25th. 

There were plenty of All-America finishes for the Green and Gold. In the relays, Camilla Carbone, Zoe DeKieVit, Txell Font, and Olivia Haerr took 5th in the 200 Medley for a team record and First Team All-American honors. Michaela Nelson joined Carbone, DeKievit, and Font in the 400 Medley, as they took 4th for the best finish at the meet for the 'Cats and more First Team honors. The men's 400 Medley consisting of Erikas Kapocious, Roberto Camera, Ryan Lund, and Leo Nolles took 16th for Second Team All-America. In the 200 Freestyle, the women's team of Nelson, Becca Burrows, Pilar Perello, and Haerr took 10th. On the men's side, Nolles, Will LaCount, Camera, and Ben Stolberg finished in 16th. 

Freshman diver Tobie Stiles took 16th in the 3-meter and 12th in the 1-meter, both Second Team All-American finishes. Back in the pool, Kapocious wasn't done, grabbing 15th in the Individual Medley Relay. DeKieVit also grabbed more hardware in the 200 Breaststroke, finishing 11th. Font also flashed another All-American finish in the 200 Butterfly, finishing 14th. Ondrej Zach finished 13th in the Mile and Roberto Camera snagged 16th in the 100 Breaststroke for more All-American finishes.  


How it Happened
In Tuesday's diving prequalifications, Tobie Stiles took an eighth place finish in the 3-meter dive which helped land him a spot to compete in the championships. 

On the same day, the 800-yard Freestyle Relay had Michaela Nelson, Becca Burrows, Olivia Haerr, and Pilar Perello-Ferrer falling into 15th place with four points. Their time of 7:32.82 was only .43 behind the women representing Florida Southern. The men's team claimed 18th with a time of 6:52.49; this relay team included Erikas Kapocius, Daniel Lopez-Aponte, Roberto Camera, and Ondrej Zach

The 1000-yard Freestyle took place on Wednesday with Ondrej Zach competing for the Wildcats. He took 14th with a time of 9:15.15, a 2.78 second drop from his seed time, and added four points to the team's score. 

Following the freestyle was the 200-yard Individual Medley. Jenna Joerger and Kapocius competed in this event but were unable to qualify for the Consolation or Championship final. 

The 200-yard Medley concluded Wednesday's events. Camilla Carbone, Zoe DeKievit, Txell Font-Cantarero, and Haerr put it into high gear and earned themselves a fifth place finish. They improved their time by .99 seconds and accumulated 28 points for the Wildcats. 

The final scores on Wednesday had the women in 15th place with 32 points, only four behind Tampa, and the men tied for last with Mines at three points. 

The 400-yard Individual Medley marked the start of Thursday's activities which had Kapocius making his way into 15th place. He went into the race with a seed time of 3:55.62 and added only .23 seconds to his final time.

A 16th place finish was made by Stiles in the 3-meter dive for Second Team All-American honors. His final score of 390.45 contributed two points to NMU's score.

The 400-yard Medley Relay had Carbone, DeKievit, Font-Cantarero, and Nelson taking home a fourth place title and a new team record. Their time of 3:43.06 earned them a solid 30 points for the Wildcats. The men's team found 16th place and came out of the water at 3:14.88; this included Kapocius, Camera, Ryan Lund, and Leo Nolles.

In Friday's 100-yard Breaststroke, Camera placed 16th with a time of 55.14. Font-Cantarero took 14th in the 200-yard Butterfly, earning a new school record for the event with a time of 2:02.05. 

A 200-yard Freestyle Relay had Nelson, Burrows, Perello-Ferrer, and Haerr setting a team record at 1:33.25 while also claiming tenth place. Nolles, William LaCount, Camera, and Ben Stolberg took 16th for the men's relay. 

Friday's events ended with the women's team in 15th place at 79 points and the men's team in 24th place with 11 points. 

On the final day of the meet, Zach claimed 13th place in the 1650-yard Freestyle Relay. His final time of 15:28.36 was an improvement from his seed time of 15:33.04. 

A 200-yard Breaststroke has DeKievit fall into the consolation final category with 11th place. She contributed six points to the team score while also dropping 1.50 seconds from her time.

In the 1-meter dive, Stiles earned a score of 419.95 which put him in 12th place. This newfound score was a .05 improvement from his preliminary score.

In 17th place for the 400-yard Freestyle Relay was Joerger, Mia Strazny, DeKievit, and Font-Cantarero with a time of 3:31.22. Nolles, Stolberg, Camera, and Kapocius ended up in 21st at 3:00.92.


Team Scores
After finishing out the events of the NCAA Championship meet, the results were in. The women claimed 16th place with a score of 85 points while the men found 25th with 20 points, putting their combined final score at 105 points.
