Wildcats Control Own Fate in Houghton

MARQUETTE, Mich. -  The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team controls its playoff fate this weekend when they play the Michigan Tech Huskies, as a win would earn NMU a  home game for the first round of the GLIAC Playoffs. The 'Cats sit fourth in the GLIAC with a 15-11 overall with a 10-7 record in conference play, and the Huskies have locked in the second seed with a 22-5 overall record and a 14-3 record against conference opponents. 

The game will be broadcasted on FoxUP with Dave Ellis and Mark Evans on the call. Tip-off is set for Saturday, February 25 at 1 p.m. from the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton, Michigan.

Last Time Out
The Wildcats hosted the Parkside Rangers and the Purdue Northwest Pride for its last regular season home matchups, resulting in two big wins for the Green and Gold. 

On Thursday, it was a tight competition against a hot Parkside squad, but the 'Cats outlasted the Rangers in a back-and-forth affair for a big 73-67 victory. Makaylee Kuhn led the team with 22 points. Following behind her was Mackenzie Holzwart with 11 points. 

The 'Cats had a nail-biting competition against the Purdue Northwest Pride on Saturday, but locked down in the end, edging the Pride in a 65-61 victory. Makaylee Kuhn led the team all-around with 31 points (11-16 shooting), seven rebounds, and two assists. Kuhn's 31 points marked a season-high as she moved into ninth place in the all-time scoring list. 


Cat Attack
The Wildcats are 15-11 (10-7 GLIAC) this season and currently sit fourth in the GLIAC standings. NMU averages 60.1 PPG, the second-lowest average in the conference. What NMU lacks in offense is made up for in defense, as the 57.0 PPG allowed is the second-best mark in the conference. Opponents shoot 38.8% against the Green and Gold defense, good for fourth in the conference. The Wildcats have a 5.7 rebounding margin and averages 38.2 rebounds per game, both second-best in the conference. Northern also holds opponents to 10.3 assists/game, the third-best mark in the GLIAC. 

NMU is led by Makaylee Kuhn with an average of 16.1 PPG and 7.5 RPG. Mackenzie Holzwart averages 9.4 PPG and 5.1 RPG.

Scouting Michigan Tech
The Huskies come into the weekend riding a three-game win streak and are 5-1 in their last six games, and 11-2 in their last 13. The Huskies are a perfect 12-0 on their home court this season. 

The Huskies are led by Isabella Lenz and Ellie Mackay, who average 13.9 and 13.5 PPG, respectively. Sara Dax leads the GLIAC in FG%, shooting 57.5%. 


Previous Matchup vs. Michigan Tech
The 'Cats came up short against the No. 21 Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, January 14 at the Berry, falling 69-56. The 'Cats never led in the contest and trailed by as many as 15. Despite getting the deficit to six points in the fourth quarter, NMU could not stop the Huskies when needed. 

Makaylee Kuhn led all scorers with 24 points on 10-17 shooting. Mackenzie Holzwart also had an efficient offensive display with 16 points. The Huskies had four in double figures led by Ellie Mackay with 19 points. NMU went 21-55 (38.2%) from the floor while MTU was 26-54 (48.1%).
