HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team competed at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Saturday, where four Wildcats earned podium finishes en route to a 7th place finish.
The top finish for the Wildcats came at 155, with
Noelle Gaffney finishing in second place for 16.0 team points after narrowly being edge in the title bout by decision. Gaffney picked up a pair of victories by tech fall in both the quarterfinal and semifinal to reach the final.
Another podium spot earned for the Green and Gold was in the 143 weight class, as
Alissa Caltagirone finished in 3rd place scoring 17.0 team points. She held a record of 5-1 in six matches, with two wins by decision, one by tech fall, one by fall, and another by forfeit. In the third place match, Caltagirone won by fall over Kendall Bostelman (North Central) (4:40).
A pair of 6th place podium finishes came from
Zhivanna Magdaleno in the 123 weight class and
Ruby Joseph in the 170. Magdaleno scored 11.5 team points after going 3-3 in her six matches. Joseph tacked on 12.0 points also going 3-3, with all three victories coming via fall.
Sharon Leon added another three points for the Wildcats at 136, picking up one victory in three bouts.
Northern finished in 7th place of 15 competing schools/clubs. North Central College ran away with the team victory. The Green and Gold collective had seven pins, the third most at the event. Joseph led the way with three, tying her for the second most of all wrestlers.
