MARQUETTE, Mich. - Northern Michigan University's very own Nick Baumgartner grabbed his first gold medal in the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Born in Iron River, Baumgartner was an All-American and state champ in wrestling, state champion hurdler, and All-State football player. Graduating from West Iron County High School, Nick enrolled at NMU and was a part of the Wildcat football program. After attending a semester at Northern, Baumgartner evaluated his future career option, discovering snowboard cross.Â
This is Baumgartner's fourth Winter Olympics, participating in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Winter Olympics. Nick has also competed in the 2011 and 2012 Winter X Games, capturing a gold and silver medal.Â
Baumgartner competed alongside gold medalist Lindsey Jacobellis in the Olympic debut of mixed team snowboard cross. Competing against competition half his age, Nick rallied alongside his teammates to defy the odds and pull away with a gold medal for the United States.
Northern Michigan University is extremely proud and honored to have such special alumni and wish the best to the rest of the athletes competing for the United States of America.Â
