Wildcats Win 800 Free Relay for 4th-Straight Year as Men's Team Moves Into Second Place

CLEVELAND, OHIO -  The Northern Michigan University Men's Swim and Dive team moved into second place and saw their fourth-straight victory in the 800-yard Freestyle as the team completed the third day of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

  DOMINATING THE 800 FREE RELAY

The Wildcats have dominated the 800 Free Relay as they have now won it all four years since NMU brought back the men's team. This year's squad junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany), freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), Senior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania), and junior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) claimed victory with a time of  6:38.57 finishing over three seconds faster than second place.

  GETTING POINTS

The men's team saw five Wildcats get points in their 500 yard freestyle. Dapkus led the way and touched third in a time of  4:29.74. Senior Janne Roovers (Khobar, Saudi Arabia) placed sixth with a time of 4:32.50.  Busse timed in at 4:30.63 for ninth place while Reinhold took 11th at 4:35.75. Freshman Levi Lewis (Little Rock, Ark.) rounded out the race with a time of 4:46.81.

  THREE IN THE TOP EIGHT

NMU placed three in the top eight of the 100-yard Backstrok. Senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia) placed third with a time of 47.36 while Budai took fifth with a time of 48.31.  Senior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K.) touched seventh at 49.78. Following them was senior Esteban Gutierrez (Chihuahua, Mexico) getting ninth with 49.92 and junior Maksim Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn.) touched at 52.25 to get 16th.

  THREE IN A ROW

In the 100 breaststroke, the placed in three-straight spots.  Senior Benjamin Lindberg (Skelleftea, Sweden) placed fifth with a 55.30. Right behind was senior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica), who touched the wall in sixth place at 55.78.  Freshman Lukas Bauer (Redwood City, Calif.) finished seventh with a time of 56.06.

  100 FLY

Senior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain) placed third in the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:48.64. Witha time of 1:49.96, senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia) claimed fifth place. 

  POINTS IN DIVING

For the 1 meter dive, Ryan Glover and senior Nathan Rotundo (Marquette, Mich.) grabbed seventh and eighth place respectively.

  TEAM RESULTS

The Wildcats have 616 points after the third day and have moved past Wayne Stae University, who has 599.5 points, into second place. NMU trails leader Grand Valley State University by just 6.5 points as the teams head into the final day of the GLIAC Championships.

  UP NEXT

The team will begin it's fourth and final day of the conference meet tomorrow starting with preliminary races at 10 AM, which include the 100-yard Freestyle, 200-yard Backstroke, 200-yard Breaststroke, and heats of the 1650-yard Freestyle. Women's preliminary diving begins at 2:15, and swimming finals begin at 5:30, which will include the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
