MARQUETTE, Mich. — Robbie Payne cashed in on a man advantage late in the third period to send the Northern Michigan hockey team past Alaska-Anchorage, 3-2, Friday night at the Berry Events Center.

Payne's second game-winning power play marker in three games moves the Wildcats to 11-10-6 (8-7-4 WCHA) on the season.

In the scoreless opening frame, Northern Michigan only allowed a single shot during two Seawolf man advantages. The only quality chance of the period came around the halfway point when Sean MacTavish stripped a Wildcat of the puck in the slot and fired an uncontested shot on net, which Mathias Dahlstrom blocked and sent to the corner.

After Alaska-Anchorage opened the scoring with a Jarrett Brown power play goal at 2:33 of the second, Northern Michigan netted two unanswered tallies to take the lead. At the 9:24 mark, Cohen Adair forced a turnover on a Seawolf breakout and then fed Justin Rose on the right wing for a one-timer, which beat Olivier Mantha five hole.

Then, during the Wildcats' second man advantage of the night at 13:16, Brock Maschmeyer blasted a point shot that flew over Mantha's shoulder, popping the bottle and giving Northern Michigan a 2-1 advantage.

Alaska-Anchorage evened the score at 5:23 of the third when Tad Kozun intercepted a Wildcat pass along the boards on the left wing and then sent a low shot on net that somehow trickled between Dahlstrom and the left post.

Northern Michigan regained the lead when awarded a man advantage at 14:10 after Austin Azurdia was called for hooking. Thirty two seconds later, Payne rifled a shot from the very top of the left circle that beat a screened Mantha glove side.

Dahlstrom, who finished with 22 saves, made two in the final minutes with Mantha pulled for the extra attacker to preserve the victory.

The Wildcats and Seawolves close their series tomorrow at 7:07 p.m.

Rose and Sami Salminen returned to the lineup after extended absences; Rose's last appearance was Oct. 10 at Wisconsin while Salminen's was Oct. 23 against Michigan Tech ...
